The Falkirk Wheel

On Saturday we visited two of Scotland's top tourist destinations near Falkirk, The Kelpies (blog post HERE) and the Falkirk Wheel, which an impressive piece of modern engineering that links the Grand Union and the Forth and Clyde Canals.

Historically, the two canals had been joined at Falkirk by a flight of 11 locks that stepped down across a distance of 1.5km, but these were dismantled in 1933, breaking the link.  To mark the regeneration of the region plans were drawn up to design and build the worlds first and only rotating boat lift and on the 24 May 2002 HM Queen Elizabeth opened the Falkirk Wheel.
