Fujinon XF50-140mm f2.8: The Flexible Friend
Over the past few months I have been putting the Fujinon XF50-140mm f2.8R OIS WR through its paces and this lens has become my new best friend of the Fujinon range. My favourite Nikon lens was my Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 and so it is no surprise that I the 50-140mm (76mm-213mm equivalent) found its way into my camera bag in June.
Physically there is no denying that the 50-140mm f2.8 is a big lens but it is smaller than the equivalent Nikon or Canon lens and on the price front it beats the other two Japanese manufacturers as well.
The build quality of the product is what we have come to expect from an X-Series lens, superbly screwed together - it feels like a professional lens and has the new red XF badge on the lens barrel denoting its status.
However it is the results that are the most important and this lens does not disappoint. In fact I would go so far as saying the 50-140mm f2.8 is the best XF lens so far. The AF is snappy and the OIS system works so well that you are encouraged to shoot at 1/30 or even 1/15 at 140mm and the results are still pin sharp. The lens is also weather resistant, which is good to know when I am working in wet or dusty conditions.
For me it is the flexibility that the 50-140mm offers, a short to medium range telephoto with a constant f2.8 aperture means that I am always ready to grab the shot when this lens is mounted on the X-T1. There is a reason that professional photographers, no matter what camera they use, has a fast short telephoto zoom in their camera bag.
Here are some shots from around the pitlane yesterday at the Circuit of the Americas where the World Endurance Championship is preparing for this weekend's Lone Star Le Mans event near Austin, Texas.
