Elgol, Isle of Skye

Sunset at Elgol
The Isle of Skye is one of the most visited parts of Scotland and for good reason.  The island is large and the landscape is stunning.  Every year Skye attracts mountaineers, extreme sports and wildlife enthusiasts, walkers and, of course, photographers.  Elgol on the south side of the island was one place we hadn't visited before and is located on a long and windy single track road from Broadford and Torrin.

A fishing boat arrives in Elgol
The little community surrounds the small harbour, which is used by fishermen and pleasure trip operators and the car park can get very busy during the day.  However this changes in the evening as the tourists head back to their hotels, guest house and camp sites and the harbour becomes a lot more peaceful.

We were in Elgol for a wedding but we took the opportunity to take images of the scenery and take a trip out on the 'Bella Jane', one of the boats taking the regular trip across the bay towards the base of the Cuillin mountain range and Loch Coruisk.  We didn't have time to get off the boat because our time was limited before the wedding the same day but it was worth the trip to get a closer look at the mountains and the wildlife.

There aren't many B&Bs in Elgol and we stayed at Rose Croft, a very comfortable place for the two nights we were there.  However we still had to use the car to get down the steep hill to the harbour as I wouldn't have wanted to climb back up that road in the dark, fending off the dreaded Scottish midges, with all the camera gear I needed for the wedding.

At the end of the day we were treated to the most spectacular sunset behind the Cuillin Mountains.
