The John Muir Way Bench

John Muir is Dunbar's most famous son and 2014 is the centenary of the death of the explorer, environmentalist and writer.  A new wooden bench was installed overlooking the bay in Dunbar next to the beginning of the 134-mile John Muir Way and the words "Keep Close to Nature's Heart...And Break Clear Away, Once in a While" are carved on the arms.

John Muir was born in April 1838 and left Dunbar in 1849 when his family emigrated to America.  Muir helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas and the Sierra Club, which he founded, is a prominent American conservation organization.

The John Muir Way was opened in April of this year (see blog HERE), which starts in Dunbar and finishes in 134 miles away in Helensburgh on the west coast of Scotland, the place where the Muir family boarded the ship to America.
