The Windmill at Thurne on the Norfolk Broads

The windmill at Thurne on the Norfolk Broads is a familiar sight for all visitors, whether arriving by boat or by car.  We visited two years running. 2007 when we camped in the village next to the excellent village pub, and in 2008 when we moored our hired river cruiser for the final night of our four nights sailing the Broads.

Thurne is a small riverside Broadland village in Norfolk that either gives or takes its name from the River Thurne that flows directly by. Thurne is not far from the mouth of the river (where it meets the River Bure), with the village located at the end of a dyke with the famous Thurne drainage mill at its head.

Thurne dyke drainage mill was built beside the River Thurne at the mouth of Thurne Dyke in 1820 and was saved from destruction in 1949, when the mill was lying derelict, and eventually restored with the assistance of the Norfolk Windmills Trust.
