Iona Beach

This is a shot from our holiday on the West Coast of Scotland in August 2009.  This was taken on the Island of Iona, which boasts some of the whitest and cleanest beaches in the UK.  This picture is looking back across the narrow straight to the Isle of Mull and the village of Fionnphort where you can catch the ferry for the short 5 minute crossing to Iona.

We stayed for three days on Iona in 1994. It is a beautiful and very peaceful island which is only 4 miles long by 1 mile wide and you can walk around Iona in less than a day.

Iona is famed as the birth place of Christianity when St Columba landed here from Ireland and founded an abbey in 563AD.  A restored 13th-century medieval abbey now stands on the site of Columba’s church. Beside it stand tall, intricately carved preaching crosses, dating from the 8th and 9th centuries.

The abbey can be seen on the headland surrounded by houses of the local community on Iona
