Lafarge Cement Works, Dunbar

One of the things I have learnt over the many years of taking photographs of industrial buildings is one that is pretty much a blot on the landscape during the day can look very different at night when the lights come on.  This is the case with the Lafarge Cement Works that is situated next to Barns Ness and White Sands beach.

There has been a cement industry near to Dunbar for a long time, over 300 years in fact, and there is a lot of evidence to support the historical significance of this along the shoreline with old harbours and abandoned kilns.   The Lafarge works and neighbouring quarry is a major employer in the town and it sits at the eastern end of Dunbar next to the A1.

As I drove back from the sunset shoot at Barns Ness lighthouse on Tuesday I saw the potential in a photograph of the works reflected in the large water filled quarry.  Setting the X-T1 and 14mm f2.8 lens on the Manfrotto tripod I took three 30 second images, with the one above coming out the best in the fading evening light.

The glow of the lights from the works are reflected in the low lying clouds and the billowing chimney smoke also catches the light.  The whole scene takes on a certain beauty that is far from evident when the sun is in the sky.
