Evening Practice in Mexico

The second 90-minute Free Practice session of the FIA World Endurance Championship event in Mexico gave me another opportunity to test the AF functions of the X-T2 and I continue to be impressed by the capabilities of this new camera and the XF100-400mm lens.


Most of the circuit in Mexico City is surrounded by high debris fences and photographers use the photo windows cut for the purpose of shooting the action.  However these locations are limiting and I saw another opportunity late in the evening.  The shot of the Gulf Racing Porsche and the Alpine-Nissan LMP2 car below were shot through the links in the fence using the 100-400mm at f5.6 to throw the fence out of focus.  The AF on the X-T2 follow focused on the cars and didn't once attempt to focus on the fence in front of the camera.


 The rest of the time was spent at the photo holes at the stadium section of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, trying to find some alternative shots.  I fitted the 1.4x converter to the 100-400mm to give the lens more pulling power to focus on sections of the cars.



The continous AF on the X-T2 was quick and accurate.  It also wasn't fooled once by the bright lights on the cars coming towards me or by the sunlight bouncing off the bodywork. I am 100% confident in the ability of the X-T2 as a camera for capturing sports action.

    Thanks for these posts Jeff - they are both interesting and informative. Glad the X-T2 is working out so well. Today I've had confirmation that mine should be delivered at the end of next week just in time for a trip to Spa the following weekend where I'm covering the annual Spa Six-Hours event (for historics). Your latest photos continue to give me reassurance with the camera's abilities - looking forward to using it!

      Thanks Gary, the X-T2 can certainly deliver the goods. I will be at Spa at the end of September with the European Le Mans Series straight after the next WEC event in Texas.

      Hello Jeff, thanks so much for your images and commentary re the XT2 and the 100-400 lens. The pictures are really good but do you think the set up would work just as well when the moving object moves within itself, e.g. humans in football, rugby?

      John, I have 100% confidence that the X-T2 would work with subjects such as Rugby as I have worked at Murrayfield shooting the Scotland v France game last March with the X-Pro2. And the X-T2's AF system is better than the X-T2. Here's a link to the blog on this -

Yesterday Fujifilm launched the latest edition to the Fujinon XF lens line up, the XF 2X TC WR teleconverter for use with the XF50-140mm f2.8 and XF100-400mm f4.5/5.6 zoom lenses.  In April I was invited by Fujifilm to test the new converter and here are my thoughts on this new lens. REVIEW: Using Nikon Lenses on a Fuji X Camera

I've been using the Fujifilm X-Pro1 for the past month and I haven't enjoyed my photography so much since I bought the Fuji X100 12 months earlier.  The only issue I have with the X-Pro1 is the lack of a long telephoto lens.  The longest lens I have is the 60mm f2.4, which is the equivalent of a 90mm telephoto; it's a great lens but I sometimes wish my Fuji system had a bit more pulling power.   Fuji have provided the X system with a telephoto zoom, the 55-200mm f3.5 / f4.8 R LM OIS and I will be testing this lens next week for three days. However my Nikon kit has one of the best short telephoto zooms in the world, the Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D.  I bought this lens brand new in 1996 for £1600.00 and it has been a faithful companion ever since. One of the things I learned very quickly when using video is the need for clear audio. It doesn't matter how good the video looks, if the audio is poor, then the video is not going to be well received. Over the years I have invested in good, portable microphones even invested in a radio mic system.  This worked really well but when working in a motorsport environment, a broad range of radio frequencies are used for various uses and radio microphone frequencies are strictly controlled.  in some countries you also need to buy a licence, which can cost hundreds of pounds, so I quickly reverted back to wired microphones. This brought its own problems as when interviewing drivers the surrounding environment can be noisy, so you need to get the microphone as close as possible.  Of course, the extra added complication in the last few months means the interviewer has to stand at least 1.5 metres, which means wires trailing across the floor, which isn't good.
