The Old Wooden Platform at Barns Ness

While I was out at Barns Ness on Monday conducting the latest 'Back to Basics' MacLean Photographic workshop I decided to stop by the old wooden platform that is beached near the lighthouse.

The platform is in a fair state of decay but the shapes and colours are wonderful and it is a good subject to point a camera lens at.  The wide sweeping landscapes are not the only photographic subject and I advise my students to look out for all opportunities, both large and small.

The ends of the beams have been weathered into beautiful patterns with the rings in the wood standing out in layers.  The rusted bolts provide a colourful counterpoint to the grey of the wood, which moss and lichen also provide a splash of colour.

I used the Fujifilm X-Pro2 and 90mm f2 lens to capture this set of images.

  1. These images show the 90mm f/2 seems to be almost a macro lens. Is the 90mm sharper than the 60 f/2.8 ?

    1. Gary, the 90mm f2 isn't really a macro lens and can't focus as close as a 60mm f2.4 can. I do have extension tubes that improve the focusing distance of this lens but I didn't use it for this shot. The 90mm f2 is a huge improvement on the 60mm in terms of focusing but whether it is sharper is subjective. The 60mm is a great lens but I sold it as I wasn't using it whereas the 90mm is probably my favourite of my four Fujinon primes.

I have separate album son my Flickr page for the 60mm and 90mm so you can compare the results if you wish.
