Hans Christian Anderson

Hans Christian Anderson is known and loved around the world as the writer of some of the best known  fairy tales and was born in Odense, Denmark, on 2 April 1805.  In the park outside Odense Cathedral a statue stands proud next to the river to celebrate the fact that Denmark's best known writer was born in the city.


Hans Christian Andersen was a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, but is best remembered for his fairy tales, which include The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea and The Ugly Duckling. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children as his stories express themes that transcend age and nationality.

Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, are readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. They have inspired motion pictures, plays, ballets, and animated films.
