Time is marching on for the Salen Derelicts

Regular visitors to this blog will know that one of my favourite places to visit while on Mull is to the three derelict trawlers at Salen.  I have been documenting these three old ladies over the years and the march of time is starting to catch up with them.  I've certainly noticed a marked change in their condition in the past three years as storms have started to take their toll.

I decided to get up at the crack of dawn to get some new images of the boats before the hoards of tourists arrived on the island on the first ferry crossings from Oban and Lochaline and I was rewarded with beautiful sunshine that produced a fantastic golden glow.

After taking the usual long shots to document the latest condition of the trawlers, I decided to fit the 50mm f1.4 to the Nikon D700 and set about getting some shallow depth of field detail shots.

With the tide on the turn I had to work quickly to get shots of the rear of the boats but the rust, flaking paint and rotting wood provided me with plenty of things to point the camera at in the golden light of dawn.

I'm sure it will be plenty of years before the trawlers are reduced to nothing but in the meantime I will continue to document their decay on each of our visits to Mull, which will hopefully become more frequent after our move to Dunbar this summer.
