Rusted and Eroded

Just below the lighthouse at Barns Ness on the beach is an old wooden structure that was reportedly part of an old pier or it was a mooring pontoon.  The structure is very old and worn, with the weather and the tides taking its toll on the wood and on the metal bolts and plates that were used in its construction.

However this weathering does make for an interesting photographic subject with the textures and colours.

While weathering has taking its toll the wood is also being used by people to light bonfires and there are several areas of the structure that show signs of recent fire damage.  I don't know how many more years this pontoon will survive but I will continue to be a regular visitor.
