CAPTURE NEW HORIZONS

When presented with a well hackneyed scene, such as the Trocadero and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, I try to find a different way to show the same area.  This sometimes leads to me going out on a limb and  looking for abstract images in the area.  The one thing about shooting the Eiffel Tower at night is the colours of the lights reflected in different surfaces and here are some shots I took on Wednesday night last week. It finally stopped raining so after a late dinner we headed down to the Trocadero to get some night shots of the Eiffel Tower and try out the image stabilisation on the Fujinon 55-200 lens to see how low I could take the shutter speed before camera shake crept in - very, very impressive and more on this on Saturday's blog. Situated above the Jardins du Trocodero outside the Palais de Chaillot is a 21-foot bronze Apollo with lyre (or Apollon musagète) by sculptor Henri Bouchard. When out and about in Paris I like to watch and photograph other people as they take in the skyline at the tourist sites.  Take these shots from the Trocadero last Friday, I spent some time using the wide angle 14mm f2.8 Fujinon to capture some images of people with the Eiffel Tower as the back drop. Marshal Ferdinand Foch, GCB, OM, DSO (2 October 1851 – 20 March 1929) was a French soldier, military theorist, and an Allied Generalissimo during the First World War. There is a statue to the Marshal of France who accepted the German surrender in 1918 on the opposite side of the road to the Trocadero in Paris and depicts Foch riding on his horse atop a large stone column inscribed with the words 'FOCH 1851-1929 Marechal de France, de Grande Bretagne et de Pologne'.  Ferdinand Foch was accorded the honour of becoming a Field Marshal in the British Army and also in the Polish Army after the First World War. I am spending a lot of time in Paris and Le Mans thanks to my regular business trips to France in my role as the Media Delegate for the FIA World Endurance Championship.  After a meeting at the headquarters of the FIA in the Place de la Concorde I walked back to the office, which is located on the other side of the Arc de Triomphe, in the winter sunshine. I decided to take a little detour via the Trocadero instead of going to lunch.  The Eiffel Tower was visible between the buildings as I walked and I hit upon the idea of taking a series of images where the tower was just part of the image or framed by another object.  I also planned to take the shots in mono, so I switched the X-Pro1 to take B&W images with a red filter (I did select RAW and JPEG) so I did have the colour version as well. I only took the 14mm f2.8 and 35mm f1.4 lenses with me to France so I had to shoot images that suited these lenses - a two lens challenge to get the creative juices flowing...
