CAPTURE NEW HORIZONS

This was an image I captured while taking landscape shots between Kinlochewe and Torrid in the Highlands of Scotland.  I spotted the lone tree on the ridge and saw a cloud being highlighted by the sunlight drifting quite quickly into the shot.  The dark snow clouds provided a very nice contrasty scene.   With the Fujifilm X-Pro2 fitted with the XF50-140mm f2.8 I only had to wait a few minutes for the cloud to be in the perfect position to capture this image. The final picture was cropped slightly to improve the composition and was converted to mono in Silver EFEX Pro2 after a few tweaks to the contrast and clarity in Photoshop. We decided to take quick walk out on the beach at Tyninghame in the spring sunshine.  The tide was out when we arrived and the rocks and pools of water were exposed along the estuary of the Tyne River. I was drawn to the patterns and shapes formed by the lying water and the scattered rocks.  Using the Fujifilm X100 I captured a set of images from along the shoreline and the woodland. The silver birch is a favourite photographic subject because of the contrast between the brightly coloured bark compared to the rest of the woodland surrounding our home here in southern Scotland. Nothing says 'desert' more than palm trees and there are plenty here at the Bahrain International Circuit.  The paddock is lined with trees which have been strung with party lights and in the evening the whole area becomes a party area.  This evening we have our paddock welcome party for all the teams, drivers and officials and the trees will provide the perfect setting for the party in the dessert. A stroll in the woods near our home in Dunbar gave me another opportunity to test one of the four Fujinon prime lenses that came with the Fuji X-Pro1, this time the 14mm f2.8. A couple of days ago I reported that the 18mm f2 lens (27mm equiv) was the surprise wide angle of choice for the new camera.  I didn't mean that I didn't like the wider 14mm (21mm equiv), it was just a more considered choice.  However taking images of the autumnal scene in Link Wood, the wider 14mm lens proved to be a good choice. To get to the beach at Bathan's Strand you have to walk about half a mile through Links Wood, a wonderful mixture of different trees, including oak, beech, ash and fir.  Sunlight filtered through the leaves as we walked to Bathan's Strand. I took some pictures on the Fuji X100 as we walked and I decided to turn the images into black and white. Austria is such a beautiful country, it reminds me of Scotland with it's mountains and tree lined hillsides.  The weather for our visit to the Styrian Alps has been glorious with 30 degree temperatures and blue skies. I spotted this tree on the hill inside the Red Bull Ring circuit with a stone religious icon in the shade underneath.  The hill was covered in wild flowers so, after getting a shot of the icon on top of the hill, I decided to move down the slope to get an shot looking up with the tree silhouetted against the blue sky and white clouds. The final result is quite pleasing and I also did a mono version in high contrast but this image works best in colour with the punchy colours.  What do you think? Anyone who is a regular visitor here will know I have a thing about photographing trees.  I love the shapes and textures that change with the seasons.   Yesterday I was capturing some landscape images of the snow in the Vale of Belvoir before it all melted and I found myself in the woods on the hill above Woolsthorpe by Belvoir.  The low sun was creating some fantastic light amongst the trees so I stopped to get some shots. The tall trees heading towards the sky caught my eye so I had to try and capturing this as an image.  Using the Nikon D700 and a 17-35 wide angle zoom on the 17mm end of the range I was able to get the shot I was looking for with the sun coming through the trees. I then set about capturing the textures that were highlighted by the strong almost horizontal sunlight, using the Nikon with an 80-200 f2.8 telephoto lens and my Fuji X100 with the 19mm wide angle lens, before heading back to the car to move locations to capture some m...

When it snows in the UK as a photographer you have to make the most of it. You never know how long it will last and pristine snow will soon disappear once the dog walkers and sledgers get out and about.  So yesterday evening I decided to head out to the village of Bitchfield hoping to spot the wild barn owl that is often seen flying about the road between Grantham and Corby Glen. On arrival I waited to see if the owl would make an appearance but when the light started to drop I decided to switch lenses and head off to do some landscapes in the snowy conditions.  There is a wonderful solitary tree with a hedge on the top of a ridge and the snow leading up to the hedge had not been disturbed except for some animal tracks. With branches bare of leaves, trees in winter take on a different look than in the rest of the year and provide lots of opportunities to capture some bizarre images.   A trip up to Jubilee Walk in the Vale of Belvoir gave me plenty of opportunity to capture the different shapes and patterns in the wood and the branches. Looking Up - Nikon D700 and Nikon 17-35 f2.8 Looking up with a wide angle lens provides a different perspective on a woodland walk.  I stood in a small clearing looking upwards until I found these three trees coming into the frame from each side. Into the Groove - Nikon D700 with Nikon 17-35 f2.8 Weathered tree trunks can also provide a good source of images, this heavily grooved Yew tree was a great photo subject and shooting up along the trunk has emphasised the deep grooves of the wood.
