CAPTURE NEW HORIZONS

Anyone who is a regular visitor to this blog will know that I love photographing I Paris.  I am lucky that I travel to Paris for business several times a year and this gives me the opportunity to explore around the famous and not so famous parts of the City of Light. The Eiffel Tower is one of my favourite places to photograph and the 1000 foot high structure dominates the skyline of Paris, in fact the Eiffel Tower is the symbol of Paris.  I have plenty of shots of the Tower and I now try to find as many different angles as possible. This shot was taken from the Paris office of the World Endurance Championship last February and while the Eiffel Tower is situated in a park on the bank of River Seine, this image taken using a telephoto lens, has compressed the perspective so it appears the Tower is in a densely built up area.  Also being such a large structure I like to zoom in and parts of the Eiffel Tower but ensuring that the image is still easily recognisable ...

When visiting big cities with iconic tourist attractions it is very tempting to go for the 'big shot' and record the standard postcard image that millions of tourist before have taken.  Now I am also one for getting the standard shot and it is something I advise all photographers to do.  This is the record image, the banker, the one that works and you'll keep in your files to remember your trip.   However it is then fun to try and do something different, to try an get a different angle or a different perspective.  It might not work but it is fun to try and if it does work, you have something to be proud of and something that is going to be worth sharing on social media. One of the things I like about the XT1 when traveling is the ability to link the camera to my iPad using the Fujifilm App to transfer images quickly and post to this blog or to social media quickly and painlessly.  I always shoot images files in RAW and JPEG but for this to work only the JPEG files are transferred. The JPEG files from the XT1 are excellent quality and I use Snapseed on the iPad to do some quick edits before posting. Yesterday evening we joined the crowds at the base of the Eiffel Tower to watch the lights on the famous monument switch on.  We had also pre booked some tickets to go up to the second stage to get some great views of Paris at night. While I have visited the Eiffel Tower on many occasions over the past few years during my many business trips to the French capital, I haven't been up the tower since 1978 when I visited Paris with my school.  So during this family trip we decided to make this part of our holiday. The Eiffel Tower is the iconic symbol of the French capital city. On my last few trips to Paris I have shot the Eiffel Tower at night in colour, including the images I posted on this blog on Wednesday HERE .   However I also decided while walking around the massive structure that the dramatic contrast created by the lighting on the 126 year old tower would be perfect for some dramatic black and white images, especially with the low clouds that were rolling across Paris bouncing the light and creating some extra drama in the night sky.   The 1063' / 324m high tower was erected in 1889 as the entrance arch to that year's World's Fair, it was initially criticised by some of France's leading artists and intellectuals for its design, but has become both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The reason for my business trips to Paris is for my job as the Media Delegate for the FIA World Endurance Championship and European Le Mans Series and my client, Le Mans Endurance Management, manages all aspects of these two sportscar championships.  The company recently moved offices in Paris and on this first trip of 2015 I had the opportunity to see the new working environment that my colleagues have to endure.  The offices are on the 5th and 6th floor of a building in Rue Gallee near to the Arc de Triomphe.  The views from the top floor are breathtaking with a fantastic view of the Eiffel Tower to the south west and Montmartre and the Sacre Cour to the east. Both these images were taken in late afternoon as the sun was setting, providing a beautiful soft glow over the 'city of light'.  My next trip will be at the beginning of March and I am looking forward to seeing this view again at the start of Spring . ---------------------------------------...

One of the many pleasures of visiting Paris on business is the opportunity to walk down to the Trocadero and the Eiffel Tower during the evening.  This evening I had the opportunity to join fellow photographer John Rourke to capture the Eiffel Tower with the lights playing off the low clouds that were skudding across the Paris sky. There was also the opportunity to stand directly under the centre line of the tower.  For the past few years there has been some building work going on and the area under the tower has been fenced off.  Today was the first opportunity to be able to stand directly under the tower and look up. When presented with a well hackneyed scene, such as the Trocadero and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, I try to find a different way to show the same area.  This sometimes leads to me going out on a limb and  looking for abstract images in the area.  The one thing about shooting the Eiffel Tower at night is the colours of the lights reflected in different surfaces and here are some shots I took on Wednesday night last week. It finally stopped raining so after a late dinner we headed down to the Trocadero to get some night shots of the Eiffel Tower and try out the image stabilisation on the Fujinon 55-200 lens to see how low I could take the shutter speed before camera shake crept in - very, very impressive and more on this on Saturday's blog. When out and about in Paris I like to watch and photograph other people as they take in the skyline at the tourist sites.  Take these shots from the Trocadero last Friday, I spent some time using the wide angle 14mm f2.8 Fujinon to capture some images of people with the Eiffel Tower as the back drop. The Passerelle Debilly (Debilly Footbridge) is an arch bridge situated in Paris bestriding the Seine. It is a footbridge that connects the quai de New York to the quai Branly, close to the Eiffel Tower. The bridge was built in 1900 to accommodate foot traffic at that year's World's Fair.  Originally it was to be a temporary structure but in 1906 the bridge was relocated to its current position and accorded permanent status. The similarities in construction between the bridge and the Eiffel Tower are clear to see and I shot a series of images to try and highlight this fact.  There are also a growing number of padlocks with messages of love on the bridge, something that is more abundant on the Pont des Arts and other bridges further up the Seine.  CLICK HERE for more information on the Passerelle Debilly.
