CAPTURE NEW HORIZONS

One of the questions I see a lot on social media groups is 'how big can I print an image from a 24mp X series sensor?'  I have posted on this subject before and I regularly print images up to A2 from files from 12mp, 16mp and 24mp sensors.  However I think this image from the European Le Mans Series / Michelin Le Mans Cup event at the Circuit Paul Ricard last September. On each side of the entrance to the main pit building were two tracking shots of the European Le Mans Series and the Michelin Le Mans Cup.  The ELMS image (on the left of the door) was taken by Jakob Ebrey of Jakob Ebrey Photography at Monza at the end of March.  The LMC image was taken by me.   The size of the image can be determined by the entrance to the main building, with the porch above the door 3 metres above the ground so the tracking shot can be estimated as being 4.5 metres (14.75 ft) across and 2m (6.5 ft) high. As I reported earlier this week, Dunbar will host the second annual Street Art Trail on Saturday 20 August and this year MacLean Photographic has been asked to display some images on the High Street. I've spent the last few days building a frame to display the 11 images I have selected to be shown to the public this weekend and also produce an A3 sheet with a bit of information about MacLean Photographic. Choosing the images to go into the display was a difficult one, as was choosing the size of image to show each picture off at its best. In the end I chose four images to be printed to A1, one at 18" x 12", 4 at 15" x 10" and two square 12" x 12" prints. I recently got involved in a conversation after a member of a Facebook group I belong to asked a question asking what was the largest size print he could obtain from the 16 megapixel X-Trans sensor.  This is a question I see quite a lot from photographers of all abilities.  I have been printed A2 images from 12mp sensor cameras since 2010 and still have several images the walls of my house taken on Nikon D90, D300S and Fujifilm X100.   All of these cameras have a 12mp sensor and the images I have printed range from A3 (42cm x 29.7cm), A2 (59.4cm x 42cm) up to 70cm x 50cm, all with no loss of quality when compared with the original image.  I also used a Nikon D800 and this camera boasts a massive 36mp sensor which certainly produces some impressive results but unless you print to billboard size you are not going to see any significant difference between the images produced by the D800 and the D300S, the main difference in quality is going to come from the lens...

How many of us take pictures but never go further than downloading them to a computer to view on a LCD screen?  I have terrabytes of hard drive space dedicated to the images I have taken over the years.  Most of these pictures are displayed online on Facebook, Flickr, 500px or on the MacLean Photographic website , but I also choose my some of best images to print, or display in a photobook. I am proud of the work I produce and I find there is nothing better than seeing one of these shots as a large image on the wall.
