Monza Pitlane with the GFX

Image
As a pitlane / portrait camera the Fujifilm GFX50S continues to impress.  I decided to take it for a walk in the pitlane during the set up day for the 4 Hours of Monza weekend, which wil be round 2 of the 2017 European Le Mans Series this Sunday. All of the images were shot using the GF120mm f4 macro lens, which is a really useful portrait lens as well as a close focusing lens.  I still prefer the 110mm f2 lens I tried in Spa last weekend but the results from the 120mm don't disappoint. I will be shooting more images at Monza over the next few days, so check back for these and my initial conclusions on the new Fujifilm GFX50S. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. ...

2014 Review: Cars

Image
Over the next few weeks we will be reviewing our year and what a year it has been.  We have traveled to the USA, Brazil, Japan, China, Bahrain, Qatar, France, Belgium, Austria, Italy, Portugal with the FIA World Endurance Championship and the European Le Mans Series.   However the highlight of 2014 we are starting with first are the cars we have driven and photographed this year. It started in March with the Aston Martin Vantage S V12 ( HERE ) which we had for two days to write a report for the official FIA WEC website and for the Silverstone programme.  This was an amazing car and a personal dream come true to have the exclusive use of an Aston Martin on the road for two whole days. Next up was a few days with the Audi R8 V8 ( HERE ) in and around Dunbar last May.  Again this was for a feature for the official FIA WEC website, which also appeared in the programme for the Chinese round in Shanghai.  In the summer I drove a Porsche 911 T...

The Best of British - Two Days with an Aston Martin Vantage

Image
Last month I posted some images of a feature I was writing for the FIA WEC Silverstone programme on the Aston Martin Vantage S V12.  Eight pages of the programme were dedicated for this feature and now that it has been published I can now share it here on the blog. Two days with the Vantage S was spent near the Aston Martin HQ at Gaydon, Aston Martin Racing HQ in Banbury and then up to Silverstone.  Day two was spent in the Malvern Hills getting some great dynamic shots of the car on some magnificent country roads.   John Rourke of Adrenal Media was taking the images while I was composing my prose while I drove the car around, but all of the shots here are ones that I took during a wonderful two days with an Aston Martin. THE BEST OF BRITISH Italy has Ferrari, Germany has Porsche and Britain has Aston Martin; these manufacturers are very much part of the national identity for each of these countries.  The Aston Martin brand, which celebrated its 100th anni...

Car Art, Aston Martin Style

Image
Aston Martin are probably the coolest cars on the planet and if you follow this blog you will be aware that I had the privilege of driving a V12 Vantage S last week for a feature that will appear on the FIAWEC.com website and in the 6 Hours of Silverstone programme on Easter weekend. These are two of the car displays at the company HQ at Gaydon in Warwickshire where I picked up and dropped off the Vantage and I am sure you agree these are fabulous to look at. The shot below is of the actual car I drove for two days and I was quite sad to leave it here in the car park.  But boy was it a fun couple days.  Next month I'll share the other images and my experience of this fantastic car. RIP Allan Simonsen

Image
Today was the worst day in my career in motorsport and this was the last picture I took on the grid before the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.  During the first few laps Allan Simonsen (on the left) was killed after his Aston Martin Vantage hit the barriers and little did I know when I gave Allan a thumbs up and a 'good luck' that this would be the last time I would see him.    I had the pleasure of working with Allan for most of my career, first meeting up with the happy-go-lucky Dane during our time at the European Formula Palmer Audi Championship in 2000.  A blindingly quick driver in single seaters but lacking the backing to move up to the upper echalons of the category he switched to sportscars and this where he really made his mark.   Allan spent a lot of time in Australia where he became a well known and successful GT driver, he stayed so long that the Danish driver picked up an Aussie accent.   I started working with Alla...

Group Photo for the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Image
One of my duties as the Photo Delegate for the 24 Hours of Le Mans is to assist in the setting of the cars for the traditional group photograph on the grid ahead of the official test.  With Eric Gilbert, the official photographer, high above the track in a 'Cherry Picker' it was my job to co-ordinate by radio the placing of the cars on the grid, which numbered 35 out of the 56 cars entered for the race.  It took around 45-minutes to get all the cars into position and the resulting shot was worth all the effort. Here are some of the images I took of the grid full of cars from ground level along with the official shot from above the track by Eric Gilbert of motorsport.com.
