VIDEO: Snowfall at White Castle

Image
With a small amount of snow falling in the Lammermuir Hills and my 13-year-old Nephew, who is stying with us for the Christmas holidays, itching to see the DJI Mavic Pro drone in action, we headed up to White Castle near Garvald to capture some aerial video and some still images nearer to the ground. Snowfall in the Lammermuir Hills from Fujifilm X Adventure on Vimeo . In the biting wind we flew the drone for around 15 minutes before packing it away to concentrate on some still pictures.  In that time I managed to capture several sweeping shots of the landscape and also captured a 'drone' and 'helix' using the Mavic Pro's in built automatic modes. The stills were taken on the Fujifilm X-T2 with the XF16-55mm f2.8 while the aerial footage was shot on the Mavic Pro in 4K. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ...

Winter in the Lammermuir Hills

Image
As anyone living in the UK for the past week the weather has been, to put it mildly, flipping awful!  People in the North of England and up here in parts of Scotland have been flooded out of their homes and others have had their power and other services disrupted.  And not just once in a lot of cases.   Luckily for me the only inconvenience has been I haven't been able to venture out with the camera this week and had to cancel the first photographic trip into the Highlands of 2016.  However compared to the thousands of people I mentioned earlier this is absolutely nothing. To show how bad the weather has been I was going to go and watch the North Berwick v Murrayfield Wanderers rugby match this afternoon but even this game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch and for rugby to be called off due to the bad weather conditions it has to be really bad. Anyway when I was leaving North Berwick I saw the clouds breaking over the Lammermuir Hills so I decided ...

Wool on a Barbed Wire Fence

Image
Sometimes the simplest of things can make a good image.  Here in East Lothian we have a lot of farms with thousands of sheep roaming the Lammermuir Hills.  This means there is a lot of wool caught on the barbed wire fences that line the fields in this part of the world.   Using the Fujfilm X_Pro1 and the 18mm lens at f2 I captured this image shooting along the fence with a very shallow depth of field to emphasise the texture in the tuft of wool. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we get a small fee for every click thru from Google and this helps support this blog - thank you for helping ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALL IMAGES ARE THE PROPERTY OF MACLEAN PHOTOGRAPHIC AND CANN...

White Castle Hill Fort

Image
White Castle is an early Iron Age hill fort in the foothills of the Lammermuir Hills near to the village of Garvald, which is about 10 miles from Dunbar.  I saw the hill fort marked on the OS map I have of the area and decided to take a trip up there to see if it was worth putting on my places to photograph when the light is right. The fort is well preserved with the three tier defence ditches still defining this 3000 year old monument.  The views across the valley towards Haddington and North Berwick are spectacular with, Traprain Law, The Law and Bass Rock clearly visible in the distance. Here are some of the images I took with a view to returning at a later date when lighting conditions are better for landscape photography. FROM THE RCAHMS Website : White Castle, an Early Iron Age fort, stands on a promontory (1,000ft OD) defended on three sides by steep slopes. It is oval on plan, measuring internally 230ft by 180ft, and is surrounded by triple ramparts whic...
