The Kelpies Structure

Image
The Kelpies near Falkirk are becoming one of most photographed tourist attractions in Scotland and trying to find a different photographic take on these two 30-metre high sculptures is a challenge. Looking through the images I have taken on several visits to Helix Park where The Kelpies are I decided to rework some of my images focusing on the structure of the statues rather than the sculptures themselves. Sculpture Andy Scott  created  The Kelpies with an outer skin made of thousands of stainless steel plates and the patterns are fascinating, so this was to be the focus of my reworking of the images.   On my previous visit I was blessed with fantastic contrasty light as the low sun and blue skies provided an excellent contrast to the cold steel structures. Using the Fujifilm X-T1 and 10-24mm f4 or 56mm f1.2 lenses I captured a series of images and I chose four to rework for the focus on the structure of The Kelpies. --------------------...

Red Bull Sculpture in the Welcome Centre

Image
After arriving at the Red Bull Ring for this weekend's European Le Mans Series race we were greeted by a new artwork hanging from the ceiling in the foyer below the Media Centre, which is located on the third floor of the main grandstand. The artwork is made up of hundreds of translucent resin globes that are strung from the ceiling to mimic the Red Bull logo and the massive Red Bull statue that overlooks the circuit.    I also took a walk up to the centre of the circuit to take some shots of the main Red Bull statue.   All shots were taken on a Fujifilm X-T1 or X-T10 with a Fujinon XF10-24mm f4, XF16mm f1.4 or XF90mm f2 lens.

Iron Sculpture

Image
While walking along the Southern Upland Way near Abbey St Bathans yesterday I came across this iron sculpture made from old farm tools and mechanical parts. It looked like an ostrich to me and it took about five foot high. The sunlight coming through the trees created pools of light on the sculpture and highlighted the head.  The iron had started to rust and the textures and colours in the metalwork were beautiful.   I took a few shots of the head using the 56mm f1.2 lens at a wide aperture to give a shallow depth of field to concentrate the viewers attention on the head of the sculpture. Earth/Cassandra II by Emily Young

Image
While walking around London yesterday afternoon I noticed a sculpture in Berkeley Square so I wandered over to take some pictures.   The large head is called Earth / Cassandra II by British artist Emily Young and is acclaimed as 'Britain's greatest living stone sculptor' by the FT.  Weighing over two tonnes, this enormous carved head of volcanic rock will reside in its impressive surroundings from the beginning of October until the end of March 2015. The Uig Chessmen

Image
The Outer Hebrides is famous for many things and one of them is the discovery of the Lewis or Uig Chessmen in 1831.  Islander Malcolm MacDonald discovered 78 walrus ivory chess pieces, and some other gaming pieces, near the village of Uig on the Isle of Lewis that are of Norse origin and are said to have been carved in the 12th Century.   The Outer Hebrides were ruled by the King of Norway for 450 years and these chessmen date from that period.    Most of the collection is on display in the British Museum in London and 11 of the chessmen are in National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. In 2006 sculpture Stephen Hayward was commissioned by Uig Community Council to carve this Oak statue, which stands in the sand dunes near to the site where the chessmen were discovered 180 years ago. The Kelpies

Image
The Kelpies are two 30 metre high statues by Glaswegian sculpture Andy Scott and are visible to travelers on the M9 motorway near Falkirk, which connects Stirling and Edinburgh.  The statues are constructed of structural steel with a stainless steel outer skin.   This stainless steel skin reflects the light of the day, and the night, and makes for an amazing sight in all weathers.  The Kelpies were officially opened to the public on the 21st April this year and we decided to take a trip out to see them. The Kelpies stand next to a new extension to the Forth and Clyde Canal in The Helix, a new parkland project built to connect 16 communities in the Falkirk Council Area, Scotland. The sculptures form a gateway at the eastern entrance to the Forth and Clyde canal, and the new canal extension built as part of The Helix land transformation project.  The Kelpies name reflected the mythological transforming beasts possessing the strength and endurance of 10 h...

Ferrari F40 Scupture in Imola

Image
The stacked Ferrari F40 statue at Imola racetrack erected by the late French sculptor Arman, pays tribute to Ferrari founder, Enzo Ferrari. Situated at the main gate this five metre high sculpture is an imposing sight but it also needs a little TLC.  While the side facing the road is OK, the image above shows the back of the sculpture and the paints is chipped and flaking.  It is a real shame because the artwork certainly draws your attention as you pull up in your car at the paddock gate to the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE NEW GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we get a small fee for every click thru from Google and this helps support this blog - thank you for helping ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------...
