CAPTURE NEW HORIZONS

Last December I upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S3 mobile phone to the new Galaxy S5.  I have been an advocate of mobile phone cameras and have noticed how casual photographers have been shunning traditional compact cameras and other offerings at the low end of the camera market because the quality of the images from phone cameras have improved so much over the past few years. I have done some blogs on this subject (Galaxy S3 HERE and Apple iPhone 4S HERE ) and today I decided to try out the camera on the S5 during a walk on Tyninghame beach this afternoon.  I took along the Fujifilm X100 as a quality comparison. The camera on the S5 produces an image that is 5212 x 2988 pixels (16mp) in 16:9 format or 3984 x 2988 (12mp) in the more traditional 4:3 format.  This compares to the 16mp Fujifilm X-T1, with its much larger APS-C sensor, file size of 4896 x 3264 and the 12mp X100s (also APS-C sensor) 4288 x 2848. I've always believed that the best camera for a job is the one you have with at the time.  I've also heard people say 'that's a great picture, you must have an expensive camera' so many times, it really makes me mad.  It isn't the camera that takes the image it's the photographer. Quite a few years ago I heard a story about David Bailey who was hired to do an advertising shoot for a Russian made medium format camera, which if anyone remembers those days were very cheap and cheerful, but for the money were pretty good cameras.  Anyway the story goes  that the advertising agency person expected Mr Bailey to use his normal medium format gear (Hasselblad if I remember correctly) for the shot but was astounded when the master photographer insisted on using the Russian camera.  It turned out very well apparently and this just goes to illustrate that a camera is only as good as the person behind it.   I've see plenty of pro gear being touted about by p...

I've always considered mobile phone cameras to be pretty good and adequate if my Nikon or Fuji have been left behind. This was the case this evening when walking on the beach near Barns Ness lighthouse this evening with my wife Julie.  I decided to leave the Fuji X100 back at home to give her a break from photography. However the scene in the sky above the beach had me cursing that decision and my only option was to get the Samsung Galaxy S3 out of my pocket.
