Lake Baikal from 40000FT

Image
On the flight from Shanghai to Paris last Monday the Air France Boeing 777-300 I was on traveled over Lake Baikal and with no clouds to obscure the view I got my first look at the world's largest (by volume) fresh water lake. Located in Southern Siberia, Lake Baikal c ontains around 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water, w ith 23,615.39 km 3  of fresh water.  With  a maximum depth of 1,642 m (5,387 ft),  Baikal is the world's deepest lake. Using the Fujifilm X100T and the X-T2 fitted with the XF16-55mm f2.8 I captured these images from my seat at 40,000 feet above the earth.   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. --------------------------------------------------...

High Above the Earth

I spend a lot of my time on planes traveling to the FIA World Endurance Championship events and today I am flying to Lisbon for the finale of the European Le Mans Series at Estoril in Portugal.  Because I have a lot of time I tend to stare out of the window and watch the world below, if it isn't covered in cloud or we are flying at night of course! These two shots were taken from the top deck of a KLM Boeing 747 last Monday flying from Tokyo to Amsterdam while we were above the mountains of Eastern Russia.  Unfortunately the flight data on my entertainment centre didn't give me the location of these mountains but it was indicating somewhere in Russia and flying at 39,000 feet it almost appears that we were on the edge of space itself. Homeward Bound

I suppose I am very lucky with my job as the Media Delegate for the FIA World Endurance Championship as it enables me to travel to a lot of exciting places. However, I have to be honest I love heading home but  with long haul destinations comes the downside of spending a lot of time at airports and on a plane.   The flight back from Shanghai to London on Sunday took 12 hours and I broke up the boredom by using the Fuji X100 to shoot the scenery out of the window.   The mountains of Eastern Russia  at 39,000 feet   The X100 is ideal for this as it is small, has a moderately wide angle lens (35mm in full frame terms) and a silent shutter so it doesn't attract the attention of the cabin crew. The policy for take off and landing is to switch off all electronic equipment but how a camera is going to affect the aircraft systems is beyond me and as a former RAF engineer I don't believe it can. Anyway here are some images and videos from my 12 hours trip bac...
