CAPTURE NEW HORIZONS

Over the past couple of months during the Coronavirus lockdown here in Scotland I have been taking a long walk around Belhaven and Dunbar as part of my daily exercise and my iPhone has been my camera of choice during this time.   Since buying the iPhone 11 at the beginning March I have been highly impressed with the quality of the images and video and while it will never replace my Fujifilm X Series system, it means I have a high quality camera in my pocket at all times. To improve the flexibility of the iPhone I bought into the Moment lens system.   QUALITY LENSES Moment are a Seattle based company producing, arguably, the world's best mobile phone lenses.  There are plenty of options to add addition lens options to your mobile phone camera but a lot are cheap plastic or glass that produce low quality results.   On the other hand Moment lenses are proper optical glass in a metal housing that fit into a Moment phone case with a bayonet mount for security....

Last month I decided to upgrade my trusty Samsung S5 to the new iPhone 6S plus.  In 2012 I had an iPhone 4S. While I wasn't a fan of the phone itself or the operating system, I did like the camera and the images it produced ( CLICK HERE for the feature).   Fast forward four years and I am now back to Apple for my phone.  One of the main reasons is the ability to link to my iPad and iMac and also the size of the iPhone 6S Plus makes it great for traveling with - it's almost a mini iPad. Anyway the camera is a big step up from the iPhone 4S and my Samsung S5 and I have been playing with the different settings for both stills and video.   I have found the panoramic function really useful as it is really easy to use and the results are great. Last December I upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S3 mobile phone to the new Galaxy S5.  I have been an advocate of mobile phone cameras and have noticed how casual photographers have been shunning traditional compact cameras and other offerings at the low end of the camera market because the quality of the images from phone cameras have improved so much over the past few years. I have done some blogs on this subject (Galaxy S3 HERE and Apple iPhone 4S HERE ) and today I decided to try out the camera on the S5 during a walk on Tyninghame beach this afternoon.  I took along the Fujifilm X100 as a quality comparison. The camera on the S5 produces an image that is 5212 x 2988 pixels (16mp) in 16:9 format or 3984 x 2988 (12mp) in the more traditional 4:3 format.  This compares to the 16mp Fujifilm X-T1, with its much larger APS-C sensor, file size of 4896 x 3264 and the 12mp X100s (also APS-C sensor) 4288 x 2848.
