CAPTURE NEW HORIZONS

The Musee des civilisations de l'Europe et de la Mediterranee at the end of the harbour in Marseilles has lots of sculptures and other art pieces in the  Mediterranean garden of Fort Saint-Jean.  Visitors can marvel at the riches of the MuCEM' collections of popular and folk art. When we visited on Sunday 30 March I decided to use the 55-200mm lens on my Fuji X-Pro1 to zoom in on some of the structures.  Here are some of the results. This is a shot from the quayside in Marseilles. As we walked down to the Museum at the harbour entrance I spotted this guitarist playing near to the harbour ferry.  A quick shot on the Fuji X-Pro1 and 55-200mm netted me this image. The image was converted into a black and white image in Silver Efex Pro2. The centre of Marseilles is a huge harbour with hundreds of boats of all shapes and sizes moored up in regimented lines. From the top of the old fortifications of the Musee des Civilisations we were able to get a brilliant view of the boats, which stretched out almost as far as the eye could see. On Sunday we visited La Ciotat and then Marseilles.  In Marseilles the dominant feature is Catholic basilica of the Notre-Dame de la Garde (literally Our Lady of the Guard).  Built in 1864 this Neo-Byzantine church was built by the architect Henri-Jacques Espérandieu on the foundations of an ancient fort located at the highest natural point in Marseille, a 149 m (490 ft) limestone outcrop on the south side of the Old Port. It is a major local landmark and the site of a popular annual pilgrimage every year on Assumption Day, August 15. The basilica was consecrated on June 5, 1864 and replaced a church of the same name built in 1214 and restored in the 15th century.
