Sea Kayaking at Arisaig

On Sunday the Carter family headed to the west coast of Scotland for a 3 hour Sea Kayak adventure with the Arisaig Sea Kayak Centre.  This would be our first experience of sea kayaking so we had our fingers and toes crossed for calm and dry weather.

We had a comfortable night at the Lochailort Inn about 10-miles east of Arisaig. The overnight weather was not promising with heavy rain and winds but we know from experience it can change quite quickly.

The next day the weather was looking better as the wind had dropped and the clouds were breaking up - perfect!

We arrived at the Arisaig Sea Kayak Centre the next day and checked in.  We were greeted by our guides Suzie and Rory and after getting kitted out we drove to the launching site on the other side of the bay.

After unloading the kayaks from the trailer and a quick run through how to get in and out of the kayak and the safety procedure should we end up in the water, we were out on the sea.

I had done a couple of expeditions on rivers in canoes when I was younger and I was pleased to find that paddling was like riding a bike, it was easy to pick up the rhythm again.

It also helped that the sea was relatively calm as we paddled out to the small islands in the bay.  Our guides were attentive and encouraging at all times and we never felt pressured to go faster than we wanted to.  We paddled along the coast, ducking in and out of bays.

As we neared the end of our short trip we spotted a group of seals in the water.  We paddled over to get a closer look and enjoyed the short show as the seals came up for a curious look from a short distance away from where we were.

We spent nearly 3-hours on the water and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
