2016 Top Ten Images: No3 - Gannets Underwater

Image
While technically this is not a perfect shot, it is the effort that it took to take that makes it very special for me. The shot was taken underwater using an X-T1 and an XF18mm f2 lens in a DICAPAC underwater bag.  The camera was then put in the water from the boat as we were leaving the Gannet colony on Bass Rock. The birds were diving into the water all around us and putting the camera in the water next to the boat I was able to capture several images of the birds underwater. Shooting Swimming Gannets Underwater with the Fujifilm X-T1

Image
This morning I finally got to land on Bass Rock after four aborted trips over the past three months due to the weather or the sea state.   Last month we nearly landed but it was called off due to the choppy condition that made a landing on the island dangerous.  However it did give me a chance to try the Fujifilm X-T1 in the DICAPAC waterproof housing I had bought for the trip.  The images on that trip were OK but it did give me a few ideas for today's boat trip and I was able to put these into operation on the trip today. The results this morning were exactly what I was looking for, images of Gannets underwater fishing near the boat. The X-T1 was fitted with the XF18mm f2 lens and then placed into the waterproof housing.  The ISO dial was set to Auto with a minimum shutter speed of 1/125s.  The aperture was set to f2.8 and the focus level flipped round to manual after setting the lens to infinity as everything after a few feet would be in focus and I...

Underwater With The Fujifilm X-T1

Image
A few weeks ago I bought a waterproof housing for my Fujifilm X-T1 and tested in the local rock pools here in Dunbar ( CLICK HERE ).  I bought this DICAPAC Waterproof Case for the landing trip to Bass Rock that I had booked and the idea was to capture some underwater shots of the Gannets diving for fish which is thrown in the water by the skipper of the tour boat. Yesterday I finally got to try the new underwater housing in the Firth of Forth.  Now I need to explain how the housing was used. The DICAPAC case was attached to my Manfrotto monopod by the means of a Mini Clamp.  The monopod has a clip and this was attached to one of the connectors on the waterproof case and then I attached a Peak Design leash to the case which was then attached to my wrist.  There was no way that the camera and case was going anywhere should it become detached from the clamp. When doing my tests I found the case, which is airtight obviously, tended to flip up and point t...

Underwater Test Shots with the X-T1

Image
Last week I bought a DICAPAC waterproof case for the Fujifilm X-T1 for a project I am working on and yesterday evening I took it for a test run in the rock pools at Skateraw harbour just along the coast from Dunbar. I attached the case to my monopod using a Manfrotto Mini Clamp and a Peak Design leash attached to the case as a safety line should the clamp fail. Using the XF18mm f2 lens on the X-T1 I set the camera to interval timer, set at 1 second intervals, and put the case in the water as the surf rolled over the rocks. I took around 200 images and while most were binned before downloading I got several 'keepers' from this unorthodox method, including the images you see on this blog. The camera was bone dry when I removed it from the case but I still put several sachets of silica gel in the bag just in case any water got through the seals. I will run a second test very soon, probably setting the WiFi remote app on the camera to see if it will work underwater ...
