From The Archives: Tobermory

Image
Here is another image from the MacLean Photographic archives, this time a shot of Tobermory harbour from our last trip to the Isle of Mull in May 2013. We are regular visitors to the Isle of Mull but since we moved to Dunbar in August 2013 we haven't had the opportunity to visit the island, which is something that will need to be remedied in 2015 and was the reason I was searching through my many archive images of Mull. This image was taken late evening and is just typical of the light that can be found on Mull.  The sky had been grey and lifeless but a change in the weather allowed the sun to peep through and add a bit of colour to the scene, which I assisted by using a grad filter on the camera. Tobermory Harbour front is one of the most photographed scenes in Scotland with the colourful houses - the Mishnish Hotel had been repainted back to yellow from a dark grey over the previous winter - and boats moored up, though on this particular day the waterfront was pretty ...

A House in an Idyllic Location

Image
On our many trips to the Isle of Mull we often think about owning a house on the island.  While we are travelling around Mull we sometimes stop to take in the view and sometimes someone has built a house to take advantage of the beautiful scenery that we've stopped to admire. This house below Aros Castle at the western end of Salen Bay is a case in point.  The white washed house sits on the shoreline at the end of a private drive with views over Salen Bay looking across the Sound of Mull to the mainland. It even has a beach on its doorstep.  How much it is worth is anyone's guess, but I like to dream that one day we could own a house like that in such an idyllic location. Ship Passing Through the Sound of Mull

Image
This was the scene two weeks ago when I was travelling down to Salen from Tobermory to photograph the derelict trawlers early in the morning.  I saw a survey vessel heading back towards Oban through the Sound of Mull so I pulled the car over to take some shots of the scene with the Nikon D800 and Sigma 50-500mm telephoto.  On the left of the picture is the Scottish mainland and on the right is Mull. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE NEW GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we get a small fee for every click thru from Google and this helps support this blog - thank you for helping ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALL IMAGES ARE THE PROPERTY OF MACLEAN PHOTOGRAPHIC AND CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY PURPOSE WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION If...

CalMac and Lismore

Image
The Sound of Mull is a busy waterway for the ferries coming and going to Oban out to the islands and they all have to pass by the Lismore Lighthouse which is situation on the opposite side of the channel from Duart Point. This is a shot of the Craignire to Oban ferry passing by the lighthouse on its way back to Oban. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE NEW GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we get a small fee for every click thru from Google and this helps support this blog - thank you for helping ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALL IMAGES ARE THE PROPERTY OF MACLEAN PHOTOGRAPHIC AND CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY PURPOSE WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION If you like what you see on this blog please visit our  Facebook  page and click 'lik...

Ferry Travel, Scottish Style

Image
We've just arrived back in Grantham after a wonderful week on the Isle of Mull. It is a long and boring 10 hours of driving back from the West Coast of Scotland but the highlight is the two ferry crossings we have to take. Unlike crossing the English Channel on a ferry (I prefer to take the Tunnel), a ferry crossing in Scotland is much more of an adventure as the scenery is stunning. The Lochaline ferry arriving at the Fishnish terminal The first crossing on our way home is the 20-minute journey from Fishnish on the Isle of Mull over to Lochaline on the mainland. I always prefer to travel the other way and land in Fishnish but it is still a great place to take a ferry as the Sound of Mull is beautiful. The Sound of Mull from the ferry The second ferry is the short 5 minute journey across the bottom of Loch Linnhe just south of Fort William.  This crossing cuts out a 35 mile trip around the Loch and once across we then head south through Glen Coe and Rannoch Moo...

Rainbow over the Sound of Mull

Image
This evening on the way back to Tobermory from a trip to the south of Mull a rain storm came over and then cleared as quickly as it arrived.  The result was an amazing rainbow that seemed to be located in the Sound of Mull.  We pulled over to take a quick picture of the scene.   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE NEW GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we get a small fee for every click thru from Google and this helps support this blog - thank you for helping ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALL IMAGES ARE THE PROPERTY OF MACLEAN PHOTOGRAPHIC AND CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY PURPOSE WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION If you like what you see on this blog please visit our  Facebook  page and click 'like' MORE IMAGE...

Looking Back at 2012: April

April saw us visiting Mull for the second time in four months, we just love the place.  This image of Lismore Lighthouse in the Sound of Mull was taken from the Oban to Craignure ferry on our way back from a shopping trip into Oban.
