2016 Top Ten Images: No4 - Porsche

Image
Conveying the sense of speed is a prerequisite for most, if not all,  motorsport on track action images.    What makes this shot of the 2015 world championship winning car is the strong sunlight bouncing off the track in Bahrain.  The Ford GT entering the frame in the top right also adds to the sense of speed. It is why I have included this image in my top ten shots of 2016.

Picture of the Week: Porsche 919 hybrid at Le Mans

Image
This is a shot taken just after sunset at the 24 Hours of Le Mans from the top of the main grandstand.   The light was just perfect for a slow pan shot using the Fujifilm X-T1 and the XF10-24mm f4, the exposure was 0.3 seconds @ f4.5 ISO400 and it took several attempts to get one shot that was good enough. This shot of race leader Nick Tandy in the no19 Porsche Team Porsche 919 hybrid works really well and the very slow shutter speed gives a real sense of movement.

Scutineering

Image
Part of the process of preparing for a race weekend is the requirement for all cars to be submitted for scrutineering.  These are a set of technical checks  to ensure that each car complies with the many regulations that govern the FIA World Endurance Championship.   Scrutineering takes most of the day from early morning to late evening.  This shot is of the no14 Porsche 919 Hybrid of Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb, one of first cars to go through the technical checks ahead of the 6 Hours of Circuit of the Americas in Texas. Image taken on the Fujifilm X-T1 + Fujinon XF10-24mm f4R OIS and converted to black and white in NIK Silver Efex Pro2. UK to Germany: Porsche 911 European Road Trip

Image
The Porsche 911 Turbo S road test feature has been published on the FIA World Endurance Championship website with the words I penned from the 3-day trip to Stuttgart and a selection of images taken with the X-T1 and X-Pro1. You can read my thoughts about the car that I had for three days and drove for over 2000km HERE but to say I had an amazing time would be a slight understatement.  This is a phenomenal machine, possibly the best GT car on the road today.   At £140,000 it isn't a cheap runabout but it certainly makes the senses tingle when you are driving along.  I've now had the privilege of testing a Porsche 911 Turbo S, an Aston Martin Vantage S V12 and an Audi R8 .  I am now talking to Ferrari to produce a similar feature with a 458 as they are the last of the three GTE manufacturers that race with us in the FIA WEC. More news on that soon. Here are some more images from the three days with the Porsche 911 Turbo S. ...

X-T1 Trackside at Le Mans - Another Continuous Auto Focus Test

Image
Porsche 919 hybrid at the 24 Hours of Le Mans Official Test on Sunday 1 June A couple of weeks ago I posted a blog testing the AF-C function on the Fujifilm X-T1. I put the system through its paces by taking candid images in a busy pitlane at Imola and I found the system on the X-T1 was a vast improvement over that of the X-Pro1.   Yesterday at Le Mans I had the opportunity to give the Continous AF system a more rigourous test when, in my role as the FIA Media Delegate for the event, I was asked by the Race Director to go trackside to photograph some new kerbs that had been installed at the last corner.  He wanted to see how the drivers were dealing with the raised kerbs that are designed to keep the cars from cutting the corner and gaining an advantage. After completing the assignment I put the X-T1 into AF-C mode and set the frame rate to 8 frames per second.  Using the Fujinon 55-200mm I followed several cars through the corner and this sequence of eleven ...
