CAPTURE NEW HORIZONS

Round 2 of the 2017 Michelin Le Mans Cup is the Road to Le Mans event supporting the world famous 24 Hours of Le Mans.   The two 55-minute races take place on the full 13.6km track, which is part permanent race circuit and part public roads, and gives the drivers competing in LMP3 and GT3, which aren't eligible for the big race, an opportunity to race at La Sarthe. Yesterday evening we gathered 12 of the Le Mans Cup competitors at the final corner of the circuit to be photographed by the 'Le Mans' sign painted on the track.  Official WEC photographer was 20 feet above the cars dirceting me while I placed each car in position with the aid of the teams. While John was photographing the cars from up high I used the Fujifilm GFX and GF32-64mm f4 lens and the X-T2 and XF10-24mm f4 lens to get some shots from ground level. Today I have spent the day working at the circuit ahead of the start of track action tomorrow, which will see cars on the 13.6km right up until midnight. Yesterday was the final day of scrutineering in the centre of Le Mans and I have edited some of my images from the event. The images were taken on the GFX50S with a GF32-64mm f4 lens or an X-T2 with a XF10-24mm f4 or XF50-140mm f2.8.  I tried to capture the festival atmosphere in the warm French summer sunshine in the Place de la Republique. I am supplying  Fujifilm UK  an image a day for their social media feed for the eight days of the 2017 24 Hours of Le Mans.   Today is the second day of Le Pesage, the two day scrutineering in the Place de la Republique in the centre of Le Mans.  The Porsche LMP1 team completed their administration and technical checks and today it was the turn of Toyota. I was on the photographers platform to take the standard team picture but afterwards I spotted the drivers giving autographs and posing for selfies with the fans.  I headed over and managed to catch Stephane Sarrazin posing with some Toyota fans using the Fujifilm GFX50S and GF32-64mm f4 lens. The  Glenfinnan Monument is located on the shores of Loch Shiel near the road from Fort William to Mallaig and commemorates the landing on the 19 August 1745 of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, or Bonnie Prince Charlie and the gathering of the clans to his banner at Glenfinnan.  The Prince's landing began the disastrous Jacobite Rebellion, which ended at Culloden near Inverness in 1746 where the Highland army was decimated. The government troops, under the Duke of Cumberland, known as 'Butcher Cumberland, purged the Highlands to put an end once and for all Scotland's resistance to Hanoverian rule in London and any thoughts of the restoration of a Stuart King. The 18 metre monument was raised in 1815, with a lone kilted highlander on top as a reminder of the lives given by the clans of Scotland to the cause of the Stuart royal line. Yesterday afternoon Monza hosted the opening round of the Michelin Le Mans Cup and I was on the grid before the start of the race to shoot a few images of the teams and drivers during the build up to the two hour race. I used the Fujifilm GFX50S fitted with the GF32-64mm f4 lens to capture these images.  They were all shot with the aperture set at f4 to give the shallowest depth of field as possible. This is the perfect environment for the GFX, capturing some behind the scenes environmental portraits and the resulting medium format images stand out from the images produced on full frame or crop frame cameras. As a pitlane / portrait camera the Fujifilm GFX50S continues to impress.  I decided to take it for a walk in the pitlane during the set up day for the 4 Hours of Monza weekend, which wil be round 2 of the 2017 European Le Mans Series this Sunday. All of the images were shot using the GF120mm f4 macro lens, which is a really useful portrait lens as well as a close focusing lens.  I still prefer the 110mm f2 lens I tried in Spa last weekend but the results from the 120mm don't disappoint. In the fourth part of my series of showing how to shoot various sports and get great action images without the need of a media pass for Fujifilm I visited the Hazelwood Ski World centre near Lincoln to attend a Malibu 3 Round Trick event.
