VIDEO: Dramatic Coastline at Fast Castle

Image
It has been a busy few weeks here at MacLean Photographic getting the new website built and ready for public viewing.   I have also been out with the DJI Mavic Pro drone shooting a series of videos to show the locations that we will visit on the MacLean Photographic workshops.  This has also proven to be problematic due to the almost constant windy weather since December, so the windows of opportunity to get out and fly have been limited. The above video was shot last week at one of my favourite locations at Fast Castle along the coast in the Scottish Borders. The folded rock formations are really dramatic and the aerial view point from out at sea really captures the nature of the geology in this part of the world. When I have completed my visits to all of the locations that feature on the MacLean Photographic workshops I will be editing a video that includes a selection of locations.  That will be coming soon. The image at the top of the page was taken on...

Beaches and Castles Workshop Promo Video

Image
Here is the second of the three promotional videos that are being unveiled to advertise the three MacLean Photographic workshops.  Yesterday we unveiled the 'Woodland Exploration' video and today we present the 'Beaches and Castles' video, which was produced using Apple iMovies. INTRODUCTION   A one day tour showing our guests some of the best locations in East Lothian for wonderful beaches and fantastic historical buildings.  With its location close to the English border, East Lothian and the Scottish Borders has many examples of 13th and 14th century fortresses that stood guard against English incursions. We will take our guests to one inland castle, one clifftop fortress and one of the several beautiful sandy beaches on this stretch of Scotland’s coastline.  The itinerary depends on the tides on the day the tour is run.  Guests will also be given a choice of the venues we can visit. DATES FOR THIS WORKSHOP The following dates are available for th...

Discovering the Ruins of Fast Castle

Image
Fast Castle is one of those places I have been meaning to visit since we moved to East Lothian in 2013 and is marked on my copy of OS Explorer Map 346 with a big pencilled circle.   Situated 3-miles north west of Coldingham in the Scottish Borders and 16 miles from Dunbar there isn't much left of the castle that was first mentioned in the 14th Century and was destroyed by Henry VIII in the 16th.  The ruins sit on a headland on cliffs 50 metres above the North Sea at the southern entrance to the Firth of Forth and are still an impressive site today, so the castle must've been spectacular back in the 13 and 14 hundreds. The ruins are reached by turning off the A1107 down towards Dowlaw Farm.  The road takes you 2-miles over two cattle grids before reaching the car park just before the entrance to the farm. There is a sign by the car park pointing the way.   The path leads you through gorse and heather and I have made a note to come back in late summer...
