FRIDAY TIP: Using Apertures to Control the Depth of Field
Depth of field in the term used to describe the distance in front of and behind a focus point that appears sharp in the image. This is controlled by focal length of a lens and the aperture used. A shallow depth of field pulls the viewers attention to the part of the image the photographer has chosen to focus on. A large depth of field makes sure that most, if not all, of an image is in focus. The following two images, taken using a Fuji X-Pro1 and Fujinon 14mm f2.8R demonstrate how the use of a wide aperture (f2.8) and a small aperture (f11) alters the depth of field.
