Fontaine Saint-Michel
Opposite the Metro station of Saint Michel is the ornate fountain that is by the architect Gabriel Davioud that bears the same name - the Fontaine Saint-Michel. Constructed in 1858-1860 during the French Second Empire the fontaine was part of the great project for the reconstruction of Paris. After several false starts, including one plan to have a statue of Napoleon Bonaparte, the final design depicts the Archangel Michael wrestling with the devil. Construction began in June 1858 and the statue was inaugurated in August 1860.
