COMMENT: Using a Smart Phone Camera

Image
I've always believed that the best camera for a job is the one you have with at the time.  I've also heard people say 'that's a great picture, you must have an expensive camera' so many times, it really makes me mad.  It isn't the camera that takes the image it's the photographer. Quite a few years ago I heard a story about David Bailey who was hired to do an advertising shoot for a Russian made medium format camera, which if anyone remembers those days were very cheap and cheerful, but for the money were pretty good cameras.  Anyway the story goes  that the advertising agency person expected Mr Bailey to use his normal medium format gear (Hasselblad if I remember correctly) for the shot but was astounded when the master photographer insisted on using the Russian camera.  It turned out very well apparently and this just goes to illustrate that a camera is only as good as the person behind it.   I've see plenty of pro gear being touted about by p...

Timelapse Video: Sunset at Belhaven Bay

Image
A very windy evening produced some interesting clouds in the skies above Dunbar yesterday evening.  I headed down to the Bridge to No Where at Belhaven Bay to provide some foreground interest as the sun began to set.  The promise of an interesting sunset was fulfilled as the sweeping clouds turned orange, pink and purple. As well as taking stills on the Fuji X-Pro1 I set the Nikon D800 on interval timer, setting the camera up for 260 shots at 15 second intervals and over the next hour it captured the moving clouds, people crossing the bridge and the setting sun. Here are some more stills taken on the Fuji X-Pro1 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we get a small fee for every click thru from Google and this helps support this blog - tha...

Look Up: Part 4

Image
Three more images of my 'Look Up' photographic project in Dunbar, East Lothian.   The reason for this project is that we spend a lot of our time walking around observing things but at head height.  I like to look up to see what is up to see what is above our eye line.   The buildings in most towns are very old and we have some beautiful architecture in the United Kingdom and this is my contribution to recording the things that are out of the ordinary, or are a bit of beautiful architecture, in my new home town of Dunbar. Friday Tip: Using the Live View Function to Aid Composition and Exposure

Image
Almost all DSLRs have a 'Live View' function that allows the photographer to use the LCD screen rather than the viewfinder to compose the scene.  The Live View has several advantages, the most notable is you can see what the camera is 'seeing' - you have a better idea of the exposure and how the different elements in the scene will be rendered in the final image.  With an optical viewfinder your brain interprets what it is viewing, which isn't necessarily the same as the camera. This shot of the D800 taking the shot of the sunrise at Barns Ness on Wednesday morning clearly shows the use of the Live View.  The screen can also be overlaid with other information, in this case I have chosen the artificial horizon to ensure everything is level.   The shot below is the image taken on the D800 after the sun had risen above the horizon. The X-Pro1 has a similar live view system but the advantage with Fuji's premier CSC is the Live View can be transferred to ...

Tyningham Fungi

Image
While walking down to the beach at Ravenheugh Sands I spotted some old trees with some unusual fungi growing from the trunk.  Using the 18mm f2 and 55-200 f3.5/f4.8 lenses on the Fuji X-Pro1 I set about photographing them. The 18mm is not an ideal macro lens but switching the X-Pro1 to macro mode in the menu I was able to focus close enough to capture the first three images below while the other two below that were shot on the 55-200mm Fujinon. All images taken on a Fujifilm X-Pro1 + Fujinon 55-200mm f3.5/f4.8R OIS or Fujinon 18mm f2R lenses -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we get a small fee for every click thru from Google and this helps support this blog - thank you for helping ----------------------------------------------------------------------------...

The Curlew

Image
The Curlew ( Numenius arquata ) is Europe's largest wading bird and we have lots of them on the shoreline along the coast here in Dunbar.  This Curlew was spotted on the beach just below the Winterfield Golf Course, searching for food in the rock pools and on the sandy shoreline.
