The Boat and the Lighthouse

Image
A beautiful day in East Lothian and the red sails of an old fishing boat working its way East along the coast from Dunbar are seen on the horizon near to the Barns Ness lighthouse. Image taken on a Fujifilm X-Pro1 - Fujinon XF60mm f2.4R macro - 1/300 @ f8 - ISO200

Slow Shutter Speed Landscape

Image
Since we moved to Dunbar in August White Sands beach has become one of our favourite places to go for a stroll on the sand and take pictures. I decided to try a different technique where I used a slowish shutter speed and moved the camera during the exposure to create a little movement in the landscape. This shot was taken on the Fujinon XF14mm f2.8R using a shutter speed of 1/30s and an aperture of f16 (ISO200).  The result is a bit of movement but enough of the image is still sharp.  A Bleach Bypass filter was applied in Color Efex during post processing to give it more of a wintery feel.   What do you think?   Image taken on a Fujifilm X-Pro1 and Fujinon XF14mm f2.8R lens   ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we...

I Love Paris

Image
This shop is situated at the top of the Champs Elysee near to the Arc de Triomphe.  It sells a lot of tourist tat and I have never bought anything from the retailer but the name sums up the sentiment I have from the many hours I have spent in the 'City of Light' over the past two years.  I look forward to further visits to this beautiful city in 2014. Vertical Panoramic Images

Image
I like the panoramic format for landscapes and I either crop suitable images to a 12:5 format or I stitch several images together in Photoshop to create a panoramic image.  However I have always created panoramic images on the horizontal and never on the vertical.    After reading an article on vertical panoramics I started to search out compositions that would suit the format.  I saw one such image in Place de la Concorde in Paris last Saturday morning with the three vertical items - the ornate lamp post, the Obelisk and the Eiffel Tower providing the elements for the composition. The second shot is of the column in the centre of Place Vendome. Good Company and Great Food (and Drink)

Image
One of the things I love about the FIA World Endurance Championship is the people I work with.  We have a small but very dedicated group of people based in Paris and Le Mans and I am very proud to be part of the team.  On Tuesday we had the end of season debrief and then had dinner at the Pershing Hall restaurant just off the Champs Elysee.  We also celebrated Marketing Manager Aurelie Mongrard's birthday with champagne. While sat at the table I was able to get some abstract shots of the food and glassware in the candlelit room on the Fujifilm X100. Christmas Market on the Champs Elysee

Image
On the Champs Elysee towards the Place de la Concorde is the location for the annual Christmas market.  The stalls line each side of the avenue along with food vendors and a fun fair.  The whole area is lit by thousands upon thousands of Christmas lights, with festive music playing over the speakers along the Champs Elysee; the whole scene is very Christmassy. The Christmas market gave me the opportunity to test the low light ability of the X-Pro1 and 35mm f1.4 lens.  With the ISO set to automatic 3200, with a minimum ISO of 200, and aperture priority selected with f2 being my preferred option as this gave me 1 stop in hand (ie f1.4) if I needed it, I was able to let the camera do the hard work while I concentrated on the composition.  This camera is amazing in low light and coped extremely well with the difficult conditions presented by the different levels of lighting. Down by the Seine

Image
A walk down to the River Seine is a must do on any visit to Paris and last weekend I did just that.  One of my favourite views is  from the Pont Alexander III which crosses the river by the Grand Palais and leads to Les Invalides. As always I spent some time trying to find some angles that were different from previous visits to the 'City of Light'.  Because this was my first trip to Paris with the X-Pro1 and its brace of prime lenses I had to think carefully about the composition because being on a bridge I couldn't 'zoom' with my feet. The Pont Alexander III is a beautiful structure with statues and ornate lights that line the road across the bridge.  After much consideration here are the shots I came up with   - The first shot is using one of the two statues in the centre of the bridge as a frame for the river and the Eiffel Tower in the distance. I just had to wait for one of the many tourist boats to come into ...
