Windfarm Sunset

Image
Another beautiful sunset here in East Lothian this evening had me driving up to the Aikengall windfarm near Innerwick to grab some shots from the top of the hill.  I had been out testing the new X-Series to Nikon lens adapter on the X-Pro1 (more on this tomorrow) but I switched back to the Fujinon 18mm f2 lens to capture these images. I chose a slowish shutter speed to give some movement in the turbine blades but I had forgotten to pack the Lee ND filter which would've provided me with better control.  Still these images the scene on the top of the hills in East Lothian this evening. All images taken on a Fujifilm X-Pro1 and 18mm f2 lens using a tripod. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we get a small fee for every click thru from Google and this helps supp...

Leave Nothing But Foot Prints.....

Image
The old saying 'leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures' is something that rings true for us when we walk along the beaches in Scotland.  We do like to pick up interesting pieces of sea glass or drift wood but on the whole we like to observe and protect this very special environment.   We also have a plastic bag in our pockets for picking up bits of rubbish from the beach but we are very lucky that visitors tend to respect the environment and the vast majority take their rubbish home. The shot above sums up this philosophy, with man and nature walking side by side and the image below of boot prints in the sand at Barns Ness. Early Morning at Barns Ness

Image
Some wonderful shapes and textures in the sand and rocks was the result of an early morning walk on the beach at Barns Ness. First stop was to get a shot of the Barns Ness lighthouse as the sun came up behind the clouds to the right of the camera. The strong sunlight provided some dramatic lighting in the clouds an in the large rock pools on the beach. The next shot was taken low down near one of the rock pools.  The low sunlight providing some strong colours in the rock and the water.  I decided to crop this as a panoramic image to improve the composition. The next shot was taken down by the shoreline and a Lee 10x ND filter was used to give a 3.5 minute exposure which has resulted in the water being smoothed out across the rock pool and also the waves have disappeared in the background. Finally a low down shot of the ripples in the sand on the beach gives a lot of foreground interest to the shot of White Sands beach. Images taken on a Fujifilm...

Portobello Beach Walk

Image
Our drive along the western end of the Firth of Forth coastline ended up in Portobello, which is located in Edinburgh.  Despite the cold wind the autumn sunshine had brought out hundreds of people to walk along the beach and promenade.  I decide this was a good opportunity to get the X100 out to record the scene. Introduction to Portobello Portobello is a beach resort located three miles (5 km) to the east of the city centre of Edinburgh, along the coast of the Firth of Forth, in Scotland. It is now a suburb of Edinburgh, with a promenade fronting on to the wide sand beach.  It's heyday was in the 19th century but   the beginning of the 21st century has seen a rapid revival of Portobello's fortunes. Perhaps helped by tourism and council initiatives, but also by a wealth of bottom-up community action, Portobello beach can be as crowded on a summer's day now as it was in the photos from the 19th century.  CLICK HERE for more on information on Port...

Glass Walls and Ice Cream

Image
Sometimes I find things to photograph in the most unusual places.  We decided to visit the S. Luca Ice Cream Parlour and Cafe in Musselburgh and behind our table was this wonderful floor to ceiling glass wall.  The sun was low in the sky and light was coming between the buildings in the centre of the town and hitting the glass, producing wonderful blue and green colours.  As usual I had my trusty X100 to hand to capture the image before the light faded away. S. Luca is a traditional ice cream maker in this part of Scotland and has been a family run business for over 100 years.  More information on S.Luca can be found HERE   ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we get a small fee for every click thru from Google and this helps support this blog - ...

Rough Seas

Image
Before I traveled to China we decided to explore the East Lothian coast nearer to Edinburgh. Our first stop off point was the beach near the Prestongrange Industrial Heritage Museum near Prestonpans.   The wind was pretty strong and this meant the sea was a little on the rough side.  The legacy of the old industrial site were everywhere to see and artifacts from the old harbour, which is now filled in, can be seen everywhere, like this concrete block. Prestongrange is a free museum - managed by East Lothian Council Museums - and an open-air site of major importance in the story of Scotland's Industrial Revolution. It was the location of a sixteenth-century harbour, a seventeenth-century glass works, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century potteries and a nineteenth/twentieth-century coal mine and brick works. Sunlight on Bass Rock

Image
This was the scene on Tyningham beach a few days ago with the sun coming through the clouds to light Bass Rock beautifully and producing some fantastic colours along the shoreline at Tyningham as the waves crashed onto the beach. During the summer months Bass Rock is white as there are 140,000 Gannets nesting on the cliffs but now they have left the island has returned to a more normal brown colour. The image was taken on a Fujifilm X-Pro1 and 60mm f2.4 macro lens.  The exposure was 1/640 @ f11 - ISO400 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we get a small fee for every click thru from Google and this helps support this blog - thank you for helping ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------...
