Bridge Over the River Tummel

Image
On Friday I spent the day in the Highlands photographing the autumn colours along the River Tummel. While shooting from the footbridge over the river near Pitlochry I decided to take a few images using the Samyang 8mm Fisheye on the Fujifilm X-Pro2.  This 180 degree field of view lens is very good at keeping distortions under control but sometimes I like to take images that enhance the fisheye look of the lens. The top image is using the bridge handrails as a lead in line to the copse of trees at the end, while the A9 road bridge spanning the river provides a nice frame for the river and the trees, with the fisheye effect adding a curve to the bridge that was actually right above my head when I took the image. Autumn Photo Tour in The Highlands

Image
To photograph autumn in the Highlands is a very rare occurrence for me because of my motorsport schedule at this time of year.  Between September and November I have seven events in just eleven weeks in Mexico, USA, Belgium, Japan, Portugal, China and Bahrain which doesn't leave a lot of time for other work in between.  This year I set aside one day to go north and explore the area around Pitlochry and the River Tummel. So an early start last Friday with friend and fellow photographer Alistair Spence saw us heading over the Forth Road Bridge towards our first stop just north of Dunkeld to catch the dawn.  We stopped on the side of Loch Craiglush (Point A on the map) looking east waiting for the sun to come up above the tree line on the opposite shore at 08h15.     Loch Craiglush at Dawn - Fujifilm X-T2 + XF10-24mm f4 - 240s @ f11 ISO100 I had set the Fujifilm X-T2, fitted with the XF10-24mm f4 ultra wide angle zoom, on the Manfrotto 190...

Glen Lochay

Image
On last month's visit to the Highlands after we had captured the early morning light at Loch Tay, we headed back to Killin and then up Glen Lochay.  The weather had changed from the beautiful morning light we had experienced at Loch Tay but, as always, we had to adapt our shoot plan accordingly. Traveling up the single track road, past lots of people wild camping in the glen, we eventually came to part of the river that was free flowing over several small falls.  After a short rain burst the clouds had started to break up so we grabbed our gear and headed down to the rocks next to the river. This images was shot on the Fujifilm X-T2 and Fujinon 10-24mm f4 lens with a 30 second exposure at f8 (ISO 800).  The camera was fitted with a Lee 0.9 ND soft grad and a 10x ND 'Big Stopper'.  The Manfrotto tripod was set low in the water to get the flowing river and the rocks as close to the camera as possible. The image was converted to monochrome with NIK Silver EFEX...

A Great View from the Tokyo Skytree

Image
One of the places we visited on the recent trip to Japan was the Tokyo Skytree, taking in the breathtaking views of the Japanese capital from the lower observation deck 350m above the ground. Tokyo Skytree is a broadcasting, restaurant, and observation tower in Sumida, Tokyo, Japan. It became the tallest structure in Japan in 2010 and reached its full height of 634.0 metres (2,080 ft) in March 2011. The tower is the primary television and radio broadcast site for the Kantō region; the older Tokyo Tower no longer gives complete digital terrestrial television broadcasting coverage because it is surrounded by high-rise buildings. Skytree was completed on 29 February 2012, with the tower opening to the public on 22 May 2012. The 360 degree observation tower gave a great view over the city with clear blue skies enabling us to see to the horizon.  I chose to use the Fujifilm X-T1 to get these shots because we were accompanied by some journalists and it was...
