Down at the Harbour

Image
After two weeks on the road in Texas and in Belgium I now have a few days at home in Dunbar and today I hosted my first Back to Basics workshop for nearly a month. As usual the workshop was conducted in and around the beautiful working harbours we have in Dunbar.  We first visited the older Cromwell Harbour before moving across to the newer (and by newer I mean 19th century) Victoria Harbour. While we were walking about the 'Acturus' came back into harbour from a trip out into the North Sea and we were able to get some close up shots of the boat as she came through the harbour entrance by the castle. All of the images were taken on the Fujifilm X-T2 using either the XF16-55mm f2.8 or 50-140mm f2.8 lenses.  For more information on MacLean Photographic workshops visit www.macleanphotographic.com   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUP...

Storm Clouds over Dunbar Harbour

Image
This evening I hosted the first Dunbar Photo Walk and luckily the rain showers that had fallen for most of the day held off until the walk finished at 8pm. We were at the Victoria Harbour in Dunbar when the rain started to approach the town.  The black clouds certainly made for a dramatic backdrop to the harbour. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALL IMAGES ARE THE PROPERTY OF MACLEAN PHOTOGRAPHIC AND CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY PURPOSE WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION MacLean Photographic run Tours and Workshops in East Lothian and the Borders of Scotland.   CLICK HERE  for more deta...

Row Boats

Image
Using the Fujifilm X-Pro2 and XF50-140mm f2.8 fitted with the 2x converter I took some close shots of the various row boats moored at the Balmaha harbour on Loch Lomond. In the strong afternoon sunshine the various colours and textures made for some interesting images. CLICK HERE  for more details and availability In June 2015 Jeff Car...

Camera At The Ready

Image
There is an old photographic adage that says the best camera to won is the one you have on you when there is a picture to be taken.  This was certainly the case yesterday evening when we were sitting on a bench at Newhaven Harbour in Edinburgh.   The light from the low sun was providing the perfect light for a picture of the boats and lighthouse and all I had to do was reach into my pocket for the Fujifilm X100 I usually keep there for spontaneous images when they present themselves. The image was taken on the X100 with the standard fixed 23mm f2 Fujinon lens.  The exposure was 1/320s @ f8 ISO200. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------...

The Colours of Dunbar Harbour

Image
A short walk around Cromwell Harbour earlier this week netted me some great colour and reflection shots.   The boats are now being put back into the water after they were lifted out for the winter and some have received a lick of paint to provide a colourful backdrop. Cromwell Harbour is the oldest of the two Dunbar harbours and is named after Oliver Cromwell who enhanced the anchorage at Dunbar to use as a base of operations during his invasion of Scotland in the 17th Century. I used the Fujifilm X-Pro2 with the XF100-400mm to isolate parts of the colourful scene or I fitted the 18mm f2 lens to give an overall shot of the harbour and the town of Dunbar behind. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. ...

Chinese Water Boat Men

Image
Our last day in Shanghai was spent on an excursion to the ancient water town of Zhujiajiao and then onto the Seven Treasures town.   One of the highlights of the tour was a boat ride down the waterways and this gave me the opportunity to see some of the sights from the water.   I will be doing a longer blog on this trip later in the week but the trip was perfect to capture some images of the water boat men plying their trade in a city that traces its history over 1000 years. All images were taken on the Fujifilm X-T1 and either the XF16-55mm f2.8 or XF50-140mm f2.8.  The images were then converted to mono using Silver Efex Pro2 software. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. ------------------------------------...

From The Archives: Tobermory

Image
Here is another image from the MacLean Photographic archives, this time a shot of Tobermory harbour from our last trip to the Isle of Mull in May 2013. We are regular visitors to the Isle of Mull but since we moved to Dunbar in August 2013 we haven't had the opportunity to visit the island, which is something that will need to be remedied in 2015 and was the reason I was searching through my many archive images of Mull. This image was taken late evening and is just typical of the light that can be found on Mull.  The sky had been grey and lifeless but a change in the weather allowed the sun to peep through and add a bit of colour to the scene, which I assisted by using a grad filter on the camera. Tobermory Harbour front is one of the most photographed scenes in Scotland with the colourful houses - the Mishnish Hotel had been repainted back to yellow from a dark grey over the previous winter - and boats moored up, though on this particular day the waterfront was pretty ...

Dunbar Harbour Reflections

Image
Dunbar Harbour is a beautiful place to sit and watch the world go by, especially the fishing and pleasure boats that use the facilities that Dunbar has to offer.   As a working port, Dunbar is home to a few fishing vessels of various sizes and the reflections in the water, especially on a foggy day which tend to mute the bold colours, provide some great photographic opportunities. Walking along the harbour wall I used the pulling power of the Fujinon 55-200mm zoom to isolate some of the reflections in the water and ropes / paintwork of some of the vessels.   All images taken on a Fujifilm X-T1 + Fujinon XF55-200mm f3.5/4.8R OIS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. ---------------------------------------------------...

Marseilles Harbour

Image
The centre of Marseilles is a huge harbour with hundreds of boats of all shapes and sizes moored up in regimented lines. From the top of the old fortifications of the Musee des Civilisations we were able to get a brilliant view of the boats, which stretched out almost as far as the eye could see. Images taken on a Fujifilm X-Pro1 and 14mm f2.8 or 55-200mm f3.5/f4.8 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we get a small fee for every click thru from Google and this helps support this blog - thank you for helping ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALL IMAGES ARE THE PROPERTY OF MACLEAN PHOTOGRAPHIC AND CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY PURPOSE WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION If you like what you see on ...
