2016 Top Ten Images: No3 - Gannets Underwater

Image
While technically this is not a perfect shot, it is the effort that it took to take that makes it very special for me. The shot was taken underwater using an X-T1 and an XF18mm f2 lens in a DICAPAC underwater bag.  The camera was then put in the water from the boat as we were leaving the Gannet colony on Bass Rock. The birds were diving into the water all around us and putting the camera in the water next to the boat I was able to capture several images of the birds underwater. 2016 Top Ten Images: No10 - Worshippers

Image
As the end of 2016 approaches I begin my countdown of my ten favourite images from my travels this year. This image was from the first of two trips to Japan this year.  This visit was in January when I was invited by Fujifilm to take part in the 5th Anniversary Press Conference in Tokyo.   On the day we arrived we visited the Senso-Ji temple in Tokyo and in the strong winter sunshine I was able to get some very atmospheric images of the worshippers burning incense in the courtyard of the temple. This image is my favourite as the lighting just gives the picture so much depth and mystery.  The picture was taken on a Fujifilm X-T1 and the XF90mm f2 lens. A Day at Murrayfield

Image
Fujifilm X-Pro2 + XF50-140mm f2.8 On Saturday afternoon I had the pleasure of joining fellow photographer Rob Gray on the touchline at Murrayfield for the first of the three Autumn Tests where Scotland would be taking on the might of Australia.   The last time the two teams met was in the quarter finals of the 2015 Rugby World Cup and Australia won by just one point when the Wallabies were awarded a controversial penalty in the dying seconds of the game to win 35-34 and a place in the semi finals against Argentina.   So this was a rematch that everyone was looking forward to and Murrayfield was packed with over 64,000 fans anticipating a great game of rugby.  They duly got their wish as the the game was one of the best I have ever witnessed but, once again, it was Australia who triumphed by a single point. Fujifilm X-T1 + Samyang 8mm f2.8 fisheye I was given a green bib, which meant I could shoot from behind the touchline in front of the south stan...

Shooting Swimming Gannets Underwater with the Fujifilm X-T1

Image
This morning I finally got to land on Bass Rock after four aborted trips over the past three months due to the weather or the sea state.   Last month we nearly landed but it was called off due to the choppy condition that made a landing on the island dangerous.  However it did give me a chance to try the Fujifilm X-T1 in the DICAPAC waterproof housing I had bought for the trip.  The images on that trip were OK but it did give me a few ideas for today's boat trip and I was able to put these into operation on the trip today. The results this morning were exactly what I was looking for, images of Gannets underwater fishing near the boat. The X-T1 was fitted with the XF18mm f2 lens and then placed into the waterproof housing.  The ISO dial was set to Auto with a minimum shutter speed of 1/125s.  The aperture was set to f2.8 and the focus level flipped round to manual after setting the lens to infinity as everything after a few feet would be in focus and I...
