REVIEW: Fujinon XF35mm f1.4R 'versus' X100 + TCL-X100

Image
In April I did a comparison test between the Fujinon XF18mm f2R and the WCL-X100, which converts the 23mm f2 lens on the X100 to a 19mm f2 lens.  Since then I have added a TCL-X100 to my kit which converts the 23mm on the X100 to a 33mm f2, almost the same focal length as the superb XF35mm f1.4R.  So after using the TCL-X100 out and about I decided to do a back-to-back review on the two lenses and see if the tele converter for the X100 can match the output from the 35mm f1.4 on the X-Pro1. SIZE First a quick size comparison.  The TCL-X100 is a big lens, much larger than the WCL-X100,  adding an extra 46.5mm to the X100's existing optic, although it's not too heavy at 180g (30g more than the WCL-X100 wide-angle conversion lens). If you check out the image above you will see the profile of the X100 has significantly changed with the converter fitted and is now slightly wider front to back than the X-Pro1 with the 35mm.   The X-Pro1 stands slightl...

In the Paddock at Estoril

Today is race day for the European Le Mans Series at the circuit of Estoril in Portugal and this will be the finale to an exciting 2014 season.  All of the six titles have yet to be decided and thousands of Portuguese fans are expected to descend on Estoril today to witness an epic encounter during the four hour race. Over the past couple of days I have taken the opportunity to walk around the paddock and pitlane to grab some shots of the teams, drivers and the facilities.  This is an old circuit with a long history of racing.  It used to be the home of the Portuguese Grand Prix for many years and has also hosted many famous sports car and bike races as well.  I last visited the track in 2001 for that year's round of the Le Mans Series, which I was also series press officer.  I am certainly glad to be back. I walked around the paddock on Friday with the Fujifilm X-T1 fitted with the 56mm f1.2 lens and the X100 fitted with the TCL-X100 tele conver...

REVIEW: Converting the X100 - Adding a TCL-X100 to the Perfect Travel Camera

Image
Earlier this year Fujifilm announced that they had developed a tele conversion lens for the X100 / X100S that would turn the Fujinon 23mm f2 lens into a 33mm (50mm equivalent) by multiplying the focal length by 1.4x.  I already own the wide angle converter (WCL-X100) that converts the focal length to 19mm (27mm equivalent) and the addition of the TCL-X100 completes, what is for me,  the perfect lightweight travel camera kit.  I decided  to take the X100 and the converters down to Dunbar Harbour to demonstrate the differences between the three focal lengths now available on the X100. 19mm - WCL-X100 23mm - no converter 33mm - TCL-X100 As can be seen from the images above, the difference is not dramatic but then this it is not meant to be.   X100 with TCL-X100 Tele Conversion Lens fitted When using the X100 I tend to choose the focal length I will be using and then leave that lens on the camera for the duration mainly because the meth...
