Ten Favourite Shots of 2015: No6 The Sax Player

Image
Street Photography is a very difficult genre to get right and I am by no means an expert at it.  I joined a Fujiholics Street Photography tour of Edinburgh with fellow X-Photographer Matt Hart to test the new Fujifilm X-T10 and the XF90mm f2 Fujinon lens. This sax player was under one of the bridges leading to the Grassmarket in Edinburgh and the side lighting was perfect for a shot on the X-T10 and 90mm lens.  The shot was transformed into a moody mono in Silver Efex Pro2. This shot makes into my Top 10 favourites of 2015 because of the subject and the lighting.  It also proved to me that the X-T10 is a brilliant performer and is not second best to my usual X-T1. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. -------------------------------...

At the Fringe

Image
The Edinburgh Festival, the world's greatest arts show, which lasts from the 7th to 31st August.  Living in Dunbar we are lucky enough to be just 30-miles from the centre of Edinburgh and this year we have decided that we are going to take in a few shows. Yesterday we spent the afternoon walking the Royal Mile and Grassmarket picking up leaflets and watching some of the street entertainers.  We also took in a comedy show before heading home. The amount of shows is bewildering and you could get overwhelmed by the sheer number of acts that are available to see across hundreds of venues in the city.  The Edinburgh Fringe have a brilliant APP available for IoS and Android. I would recommend downloading this if you are attending the Festival, it certainly helps sort out what is available and where everything is located. You also have to be careful with your money, it can be expensive.  Even the free shows expect a donation, which is only fair if the act ...

Contemplation

Image
While walking around Paris I stopped taking photographs and took in the surroundings and watched the people nearby.  The lull in my photography didn't last long but it is sometimes good to put the camera down for a while. I watched other people either enjoying the views in Paris or just enjoying a good book or playing a song in the park.

Didgeridoo Player in Dusseldorf

Image
While walking along the Rhine promenade in Düsseldorf we came across this Didgeridoo player, so I had to stop to listen and grab a couple of street images for this blog on the X-T1 and the 10-24mm f4 Fujinon.  The didgeridoo is a wind instrument developed by Indigenous Australians of northern Australia potentially within the last 1,500 years and still in widespread use today both in Australia and around the world. It is sometimes described as a natural wooden trumpet or "drone pipe". Musicologists classify it as a brass aerophone. There are no reliable sources stating the didgeridoo's exact age. Archaeological studies of rock art in Northern Australia suggest that the people of the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory have been using the didgeridoo for less than 1,000 years, based on the dating of paintings on cave walls and shelters from this period. A clear rock painting in Ginga Wardelirrhmeng, on the northern edge of the Arnhem Land plateau, from the fr...

Düsseldorf

Image
Yesterday we sent the day in Düsseldorf walking through the old part of the city to the Rhine. Unlike home in Scotland, Northern Europe is basking in warm summer sunshine and we spent a little time sitting on the bank of the mighty Rhine eating ice cream. We then joined the crowds walking along the streets where street artists provided some entertainment. The shots on this blog were taken on the X-T1 using either the 18mm f2 or the 90mm f2. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALL IMAGES ARE THE PROPERTY OF MACLEAN PHOTOGRAPHIC AND CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY PURPOSE ...

Fujiholics Edinburgh Photo Walk - Last Test of the X-T10

Image
Last Sunday I joined fellow X-Photographer Matt Hart and some other X-Series users for a Fujiholics Street Photography walk around Edinburgh. It was also the last opportunity for me to test out the Fujifilm X-T10 before it was returned to Fujifilm HQ in Bedford.  I will give my conclusions at the bottom of this blog. I will be the first to admit that Street Photography is not my forte but I do like observing people.  The X-T10 and 90mm is a perfect combination for me as the small X-T10 doesn't attract attention while the 90mm f2 allows me to stand further back and blend into the background. Most of the images on this blog were taken on the X-T10 - 90mm combination but there are some images taken on the X-T1 and 16mm f1.4. We started our walk at Haymarket railway station and headed towards Grassmarket where there are plenty of bars and cafes where the tourist hang out. We then headed up Victoria Street with the old building built on the steep hill belo...
