Fujifilm X-T3: The Next Step Forward

Image
Today (6th September 2018) Fujifilm have unveiled their latest flagship X Series camera, the X-T3, the successor to the X-T2.  The T3 comes with a new 26.1MP X-Trans sensor and new processor, the X-Trans CMOS 4 and X Processor 4, which takes the AF and Video performances of the camera to the next level. I had the opportunity to test a pre production version of the X-T3 alongside my X-T2 and X-H1 at Silverstone for two days last month and while I didn’t get the opportunity to fully test all of the new functions on the new camera, it certainly delivers in the areas that I need for my work as a sports photographer. The AF was certainly quick and accurate when shooting trackside at Silverstone, especially with the new XF200mm f2 prime lens.  The X-T2 and X-H1’s AF is already excellent, so the X-T3s increase in speed will probably not be noticed by the average X series user but the X-T3 was certainly quicker to lock on and track a car moving at speed. On the Grid at Silverstone

Image
The last few weeks have been a bit of a blur with the start of the World Endurance Championship and the European Le Mans Series seasons at Silverstone last weekend. I apologise to the readers of the Fuji X Adventure blog for the lack of content this month but I have lots of things planned with tests of the X100F and the GFX media format cameras.  I will also post the third part of the 'Shooting Sports as a Spectator' features in the next few days, which will be on Canoe Slalom. Here is a quick video from the grid walk last Sunday ahead of the 6 Hours of Silverstone, round 1 of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship.  The video was produced for the FIA social media feeds but here is my Fuji X Adventure version -  enjoy! REVIEW: The New Fujinon 2x Converter

Image
Yesterday Fujifilm launched the latest edition to the Fujinon XF lens line up, the XF 2X TC WR teleconverter for use with the XF50-140mm f2.8 and XF100-400mm f4.5/5.6 zoom lenses.  In April I was invited by Fujifilm to test the new converter and here are my thoughts on this new lens. Before I go into details I need to be upfront about something.  I've never been a fan of 2x converters because the optical quality of the lens is usually affected to a large degree.   I did have a 1.4x and 2x converter for my lenses when I was shooting with Nikon. While the 1.4x converter was regularly attached to my long f2.8 lenses, the 2x converter was probably used about three times in the 18 years I used Nikkor lenses.  I didn't like the results when using the converter so tended to not use it. Anyway back to the X-Series!  The 1.4x Fujinon converter was launched in 2015 and I have been a fan of this diminutive lens attachment on both the 50-140mm and 100-400mm....

The All New Audi R18

Image
This weekend is the opening round of the FIA World Endurance Championship at Silverstone and the all new Audi R18 will take on the all new Toyota TS050 and the evolution of the Porsche 919 that won the world title in 2015. This morning the Audi R18 was going through the pre event technical checks and I was able to grab some detail shots of the LMP1 class car that looks rather different than its predecessor that won the world titles in 2012 and 2013 and also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The images were taken on the Fujifilm X-Pro2 and the XF100-400mm f4.5/5.6 at 1/60s @ f5.6 ISO200.  All of the images were taken handheld and the OIS was essential in keeping the images sharp in the dark scrutineering bay. Colours of Silverstone

Image
Yesterday was the opening race of the 2015 World Endurance Championship, the 6 Hours of Silverstone, which was the culmination of a lot of pre season work by everyone involved in the world championship.  The result was a weekend of entertainment that we are all justifiably proud of. In my capacity as the FIA Media Delegate I headed to the grid for the pre race build up and the sun was shining.  I decided to take a few colourful images on my X-T1 with the 56mm f1.2 lens before going back to my office in the media centre to report on the race. There was a party atmosphere on the grid as the teams and drivers prepared for the 6 hours race and in the warm sunshine the drivers were relaxed and the colours around the grid really stood out. Here are some of the images I took in the build up to the 6 Hours of Silverstone. Silverstone Sunset

Today is the start of three days of track action at Silverstone for the opening round of the World Endurance Championship and the European Le Mans Series.  I am here in my capacity as the Media Delegate for both championships but, of course, I have my Fujifilm cameras to hand. This shot was taken earlier this week as the sun set behind the Wing building at Silverstone.  I managed to get into position so the sun was framed by the segments of the Wing using the Fujifilm X-T1 and the XF55-200mm telephoto zoom. On the Grid at Silverstone

Image
After a few days of sunshine at Silverstone, race day dawned overcast with a threat of rain but the typically fickle English weather certainly didn't dampen the spirits of the thousands of fans who flocked to Silverstone to watch the opening round of the FIA World Endurance Championship. Hermes - the top of the Tourist Trophy I was on the grid in my capacity as the FIA Media Delegate and also as escort for the beautiful Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy. I managed to get some shots on my Fujifilm X-T1 and X-Pro1 of the build up to the six hour race that saw a 1-2 for Toyota, with Anthony Davidson, Nicolas Lapierre and Sebastien Buemi adding their names onto the roll of honour on the base of the Tourist Trophy. Waiting for Mark Webber Fans crowd the pitlane to get close to the teams and drivers Hermes - the top of the Tourist Trophy Alex Wurz prepares for the start of the race  Porsche 919 Hybrid Ferrari 458 Italia The British Round ...
