Ice and Snow

Image
Snow has been in short supply in East Lothian this winter and it has also been pretty scarce during three landscape photography trips into the Highlands as well, but yesterday there was plenty of snow around during a trip into the Scottish Borders for a couple of meetings. As well as snowy landscapes I love taking close up shots of icy pools where the cracks and trapped bubbles of air make fantastic patterns. These images were taken of frozen pools of water formed into the deep wheel tracks on forestry commission land near Walkerburn.  The images were shot on the X-T2 and 16-55mm f2.8 with the camera set to ACROS (R) film simulation. I then processed the images through Silver EFEX Pro2 using a custom filter I have set up to give the images a extreme contrast to enhance the patterns in the ice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING...

Ten Favourite Shots of 2015: No7 Patterns in Nature

Image
I love searching for patterns and textures in nature and the Fujifilm X-T1's X-Trans sensor picks up the colours and textures perfectly. In late spring the woodland around our home in Dunbar is carpeted with ferns and the pattern created by the stems folding out from the centre attracted me to take this image.   The image was taken on the X-T1 and the Fujinon 10-24mm f4 looking straight down into the centre of the plant, that stood at around 1 metre high.  I had to make sure that my feet and legs were not in the shot! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALL IMAGES ARE THE PROPERTY OF MACLEAN PHOTOGRAPHIC AND CANNOT B...

Patterns from On High

Image
Yesterday while up on the top of the North Berwick Law, which gave us some spectacular views of the East Lothian coastline, I spotted some patterns in the fields below us. When out taking photographs I am always looking for photographs within photographs, by that I mean I am looking for something that catches my eye within a sweeping landscape or a something small within a larger subject.  As a photographer I am attracted to patterns, colours and abstract shapes that could make an interesting picture. With spring now upon us the fields are now turning from brown  to green and the tracks made by the tractors as the farmers spray their growing crops made for some interesting patterns when viewed from above. Using the Fujifilm X-T1 and the 55-200mm f3.5/4.8 telephoto zoom I was able to isolate parts of the fields to provide a couple of interesting images. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------...

24 Hours of Le Mans: Are You Seated Comfortably?

Image
Friday at Le Mans is the traditional rest day before the 24 hour race begins at 4pm tomorrow afternoon.  The gates are still open for the public, who are given access to the pitlane where they can watch the mechanics working on the cars preparing them for the greatest endurance race in the world. Many of the drivers are taking part in VIP and media activities before heading down into the centre of Le Mans for the traditional drivers parade, which starts at 5pm today. The staff at the circuit take the opportunity to clean the grandstand seating, which is waiting for some of the 250,000 spectators that will descend on the Circuit du Mans tomorrow morning.   Using the Fujifilm X-Pro1 and Fujinon XF60mm f2.4R lens I took some shots of the seating in the main grandstand, the colours and the patterns caught my eye. Patterns in the Sand

Image
With wind and tides the beaches of East Lothian are constantly changing and being reshaped on a daily basis.  The tides on this stretch of coastline rise and fall by three metres and the wind is usually blowing across the beach, whipping up the sand and creating new patterns. Take the images below from Belhaven Beach.  These were taken during a recent walk and show the patterns and shapes left by the receding tide.  Tomorrow it will be different again as the forces of nature sculpt the beach into new patterns.  It's fascinating!
