The Eyes Have It

Image
Brendon Hartley - Fujifilm GFX  + GF120mm f4 - 1/250s  @ f4 ISO400 There has been a lot of feedback from photographers using the new Fujifilm GFX50S for landscape, fashion, portraiture and weddings but not a lot from the world of sport.  Fellow X-Photographer John Rourke has been an early adopter of the new medium format system and I have one of the GFX cameras and the three lenses on test for three weeks. Today I gave it a first run in the pitlane ahead of this weekend's FIA World Endurance Championship event in Belgium at the wonderful Spa-Francorchamps circuit in the Ardennes forest.  I wandered down to the Porsche pit for the pitstop practice session which saw the drivers ready to play their part.  It gave me the opportunity to capture some portraits on the GF120mm f4 macro lens using the GFX's pinpoint focus to highlight the eyes through the helmet visor.   Setting the GFX's AF system to single point with the smallest setting for the AF I was ...

VIDEO: Rigging the Shot in Japan

Image
In September I posted a feature on the rig shot conducted by fellow X Photographer John Rourke with the two Proton Competition Porsche 911s at Spa-Francorchamps ( CLICK HERE ).  I ended the feature by saying the next rig shot was going to be with the Toyota Gazoo Racing Toyota TS050 Hybrid Le Mans Prototype (LMP1) at its home track at Fuji Speedway in Japan. This shoot was arranged for Thursday morning before the car was due to go through scrutinising (pre event technical checks) so we had just 45 minutes to complete this shoot. John, along with his photographers Ade Holbrook and Gabi Tomescu, worked swiftly to set up the carbon fibre rig and get the shots taken on the Fujifilm X-T2 and XF10-24mm f4 lens. I shot it all on video for the FIA World Endurance Championship website and social media feeds using my X-T2 and 10-24mm f4 zoom lens.    Here is the video - And here is the final image shot by John - The image above is the property of John R...

Unveiling the New Lotus LMP1 Car at Le Mans

Image
This morning Lotus unveiled their new LMP1-L challenger which is scheduled to race at the next FIA World Endurance Championship race at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas in September. The car, which had been due to race at the opening WEC round at Silverstone, had been delayed because a new power plant had to be fitted.  This meant some design changes and so the Lotus P1/01 was only unveiled to the media and the public at the 24 Hours of Le Mans today.  The Lotus will now go to Spain for testing with Christian Albers, Christophe Bouchut and Pierre Kaffer announced as the three drivers due to drive the new Lotus. Here are some of the shots from this morning's launch taken on the X-T1 fitted with the Fujinon XF10-24mm f4 and the X-Pro1 fitted with the XF35mm f1.4.
