Giant Daisy

Image
Taking a short walk by the Grantham Canal I came across a rape seed field that had started to lose it's yellow flowers.  But in the corner of the field there was a clump of giant daisies growing and I headed over the capture the flowers with my Fuji X100.  I did several images in Black and White rather than the usual colour pictures.   All images taken on Fujifilm Finepix X100 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE NEW GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we get a small fee for every click thru from Google and this helps support this blog - thank you for helping ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALL IMAGES ARE THE PROPERTY OF MACLEAN PHOTOGRAPHIC AND CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY PURPOSE WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION If you like what y...

Flora and Fauna on the Grantham Canal

Image
A grey and overcast day is not the best for landscapes but with a few breaks in the clouds I did manage to grab some shots of the wildlife on the Grantham Canal near Woolsthorpe. As usual there are Mute Swans dotted up and down the canal and one pair sailed serenely past use with their wing feathers puffed up in a typical pose.  One gave me a curious glance as it paddled past my camera but carried on down to the next lock. A flock of wild Canada Geese were sitting quietly on the bank so I approached with care and got my shots before they got into the water and paddled away. Catkins are starting to appear and Snowdrops are on the ground amongst  the trees, heralding the start to Spring, which probably means we'll have snow next week. The final shot shows one of the waterfalls at one of the disused locks along this stretch of the Grantham Canal.  One day these locks might be restored to full working order but for now the...

Bridge at Denton Wharf

Image
This shot was taken at Denton Wharf near Grantham and is one of the old bridges that spans the Grantham Canal.   In 2006 members of the Grantham Canal Society put in a concrete slipway to launch boats into the restored part of the canal as well as picnic tables and fencing to enable visitors to stop and take in the views. Many of the old road bridges along the 33 mile stretch of the Grantham Canal were replaced by low modern structures when the canal fell in disuse but the one at Denton is a foot bridge.  It has been maintained and is is in good condition.  The Grantham Canal Society aims to restore the entire stretch from Grantham to Nottingham to full working order and the low bridges will have to be restored so boats can pass under them. Into the Vale of Belvoir - Redmile

Image
As a motorist I hate it when it snows but as a photographer I love the effect that the 'white stuff' has on the landscape.  Last week, after some snow had fallen two days before, I took the opportunity to head off into the Vale of Belvoir and started at Redmile, just 5 miles from Grantham.   Things didn't start so well as the Vale was shrouded in mist and the light was grey and flat.   Walking along the Grantham Canal I decided to look for some details to focus on while I waited for the fog to lift.  I spotted some footprints in the snow left by a Moorhen or Coot that led through the reeds to the frozen canal.  Putting the legs on my Slik tripod on their lowest settings I was able to get a series of shots looking along the line of footprints. Nikon D300S - Sigma 10-20mm f4/f5.6 at 14mm - 1/25 @ f11 Meanwhile the mist had begun to lift and the church spire at Redmile could now be seen.  I set the tripod up with the canal and reeds in the foregro...
