Panoramic Japan

Image
When I am out shooting I sometimes see in my mind's eye a panoramic crop when taking images in standard 3:2 format.  Panorama's are very striking and for me can add a dynamic element to landscapes and cityscapes. It is very easy to visualise a panoramic crop.  When shooting I check to see if the important elements of an image are all concentrated into one third of the image area.  I then shoot the image with the dead area of the image either to the top or bottom of the picture.  I then crop 12:5 in post production to give me the final panorama. Japan was a perfect canvas for the 12:5 crop (or even wider) both when shooting landscapes at Lake Ashi (top picture), Enoshima (second picture) and in Tokyo (two images below). All of the images were shot on the Fujifilm X-T2 with either the 16mm f1.4, 50-140mm f2.8 and 100-400mm f4.5/5.6 lenses. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------...

Woodland Exploration Workshop

Image
Today I hosted a MacLean Photographic Woodland Exploration workshop here in East Lothian and after a week of torrential rain and howling winds the weather gods decided to smile on me and abate for the day. This morning was spent up at Innerwick Castle, exploring the woodland around the old ruin.  With bright sunlight filtering through the trees we were able to shoot some of the ferns and fungi that were spotlit by the natural light piercing the canopy of leaves above our heads. After a spot of lunch we headed out to Tyningham for a walk through the woods and along the shoreline, capturing the flowers and trees in this wonderful natural woodland setting. If you are interested in joining me on a workshop here in East Lothian you will find details on the MacLean Photographic website HERE .   Remember if you don't find a suitable date you can contact me at tours@macleanphotographic.co.uk to see if we can find a more suitable date for your schedule. A Stag Party in the Highlands

Image
Fujifilm X-T2 +XF100-400mm f4.5/5.6 + 1.4x converter - 1/125 @ f8 ISO1600 (zoom 560mm) One of the highlights of the two day winter photo trip into the Highlands of Scotland was the number of stags we saw and photographed.  Red Deer  (Cervus elaphus) roam the Highlands of Scotland but while I have seen them further south, I hadn't expected to see them in such abundance on this trip. We had seen and photographed a young stag on the roadside as we were leaving Applecross on Friday evening and I was pretty pleased with the results in such poor light, but little did I know we were going have more opportunities on the second day of our trip. Fujifilm X-T2 +XF50-140mm f2.8 - 1/110 @ f2.8 ISO6400 (zoom 140mm) As we were travelling from Loch Assynt up to Kylesku I spotted three stags off in the distance.  As we rounded a bend in the road I noticed a large rock was obscuring us from the stags and so I could, hopefully, get closer without being spotted. ...
