John Muir Stone Stacking Competition

Image
On Saturday, as the birthplace of the famous national park pioneer, poet and environmentalist, Dunbar celebrated John Muir's birthday with a series of events.   One of them was a stone stacking competition on the town's East Beach.  I wandered down to get some shots of the finished stacks as the tide was coming in. As well as the colourful, and gravity defying stacks that lined the tide line, there were stalls and live music to keep visitor entertained.   All of the images were taken on the Fujifilm X-Pro2 and the XF16-55mm f2.8 or XF50-140mm f2.8 lenses. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------...

REVIEW: The Pulling Power of the Different Fujinon Lenses

Image
Preparing the recent blogs on the Fujinon 90mm f2 and the 50-140mm f2.8 got me thinking about the other lenses in my camera bag and the different focal lengths I have available to me.  When people ask me what lenses I use I reply with 'oh I used a 10-24mm at 10mm on that shot' or 'that one was taken with the 56mm' but what does the different focal lengths do to the final image and how far away can I stand with each lens. Well I decided that I need to show the pulling power of each of the seven Fujinon lenses I have in the camera bag.  The focal length range I currently have available is 10mm to 200mm, equivalent to 15mm to 305mm in full frame terms, which are covered by the following lenses I have in my bag. Fujinon XF10-24mm F4R LM OIS Fujinon XF18mm f2R Fujinon XF35mm f1.4R Fujinon XF56mm f1.2R Fujinon XF90mm f1.2R LM WR Fujinon XF50-140mm f2.8R LM OIS WR Fujinon XF55-200mm f3.5/4.8R LM OIS So what do you mean by Full Frame? East Beach, Dunbar

Image
East Beach stretches along the front of the East Lothian town from Cromwell Harbour at the west end  along to the Golf Course to the east,  The beach is a mixture of sand and rocks, with rock pools providing great entertainment for children at low tide.  The sea wall is lined by houses, providing a great backdrop to the town's main beach front. Last week I went down to East Beach to catch the sunrise at 6:15am and on the way back I stopped to take some images of the general beach because it is not an area I tend to visit that often with the camera. Half way down the beach is an old groin, a wooden barrier that was designed to stop the beach being moved by the strong tides.  Unfortunately this has fallen in a state of disrepair and the beach at the western end has been worn away, exposing some of the sewage pipework. However the worn wooden structure makes for an interesting photographic subject. The pebbles, rocks and other seashore items...

Sunrise

Image
The promise of a nice sunrise had me out of bed and heading down to Dunbar harbour at 5:30am to catch the sun up at 6:15am.  I certainly wasn't disappointed as I set up the X-Pro1 and 55-200mm lens facing East across East Beach. These three shots were taken within 3 minutes of each other and after 10 minutes the sun was high above the horizon and too bright to take anymore images. Tomorrow morning there will be a partial solar eclipse across the UK as the moon's orbit takes it across the face of the sun, starting around 8:30am.  Here's hoping that we get clear skies over Dunbar tomorrow. All images taken on a Fujifilm X-Pro1 + Fujinon XF55-200mm f3.5/4.8 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. -----------------------------------------...

Tranquil Dunbar Video Project

Image
Over the past few months I have been posting some different timelapse videos in around my home town of Dunbar.  The videos include the sunrise at Barns Ness Lighthouse, East Beach, Dunbar Harbour, Belhaven Bridge and sunset at Belhaven Bay and I have put all of these different elements together to produce a timelapse video called 'Tranquil Dunbar'. The video is made up of over 1200 separate images shot on the Fujifilm X-T1 over the summer and put together in Windows Live Movie Maker to produce this one minute forty-seven second video. The soundtrack is called 'Cylinder 6' by US composer Chris Zabriskie and is available on the website Free Music Archive   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. -----------------------------------------...

Sea Shore Macro

Image
While shooting yesterday's Timelapse video on East Beach I took the opportunity of getting a closer look around the rock pools with the X-Pro1 and 60mm macro lens while the X-T1 automatically shot the 100+ images at 5 second intervals. Rock pools are fascinating places to explore and you don't need to be a child to appreciate the diversity of life that is captured in a tiny environment by the retreating sea at low tide. Shells, seaweed and anemones are all let out in the open by the sea for a couple of hours before it returns to submerge this world once more in salt water. Here are a selection of the images I took on the shore at Dunbar's East Beach - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the adverts you are helping support this blog - thank you. -------------------------------...

X-T1 Timelapse Video: Dunbar's East Beach

Image
This is the third timelapse video of the project I am working on in and around my home in Dunbar.  This is East Beach, the main beach in the town.  The video was taken from three locations around the bay, capturing 100 images at 5 second intervals from each of the three areas.  The 300+ images were then put together using Windows Live Movie Maker to produce the finished video. The images were loaded into Movie Maker and each image was given a display time of just 0.1 seconds, giving a frame rate of 10 frames per second.   The music is rights free and was downloaded from  www.freemusicarchive.org .  The track is  Cylinder 5  by Chris Zabriskie, the same composer I used for the Belhaven Bridge Timelapse Video HERE .  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY VISITING THE ADVERTISERS ON THIS PAGE By clicking on the ...

The Dunbar Dip 2014

Image
On New Years Day 2014 we witnessed our first Dunbar Dip where the more hardier residents of our new home town brave the cold North Sea waters off the East Beach to raise money for charity.  Over 100 brave souls went into the water while many more, ourselves included, stayed wrapped up warm but lending our support to their endeavors to raise money for charity.  Members of the Dunbar life boat crew were on hand to make sure everyone was safe. Will I be taking part in 2015?  Not a chance! All images taken on a Fujifilm X-Pro1 and 60mm f2.4 lens or Fujifilm X100 and 23mm f2 lens. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BLOG BY CLICKING THE GOOGLE ADVERTS It doesn't cost you anything to click on an advert but we get a small fee for every click thru from Google and this helps support this blog - thank you for helping -------------------...

Storm Clouds Brewing Over Dunbar

Image
It has been pointed out on my Face Book page that a lot of the images I have been posting from our new location have featured a lot of blue skies and sunshine.  The weather has been great the last few weeks but we have also had some typically Scottish weather lately as well.  To prove a point here are some shots taken on a recent walk to the east of Dunbar. However bad weather is actually more interesting to me as a photographer because it adds drama to the picture.
