Out and About in Edinburgh

Yesterday afternoon I headed to Edinburgh with fellow photographer John Rourke for a bit of street photography and then a meet up with some fellow Fujifilm photographers who were taking part in a Matt Hart workshop in the city.

I love Edinburgh for variety of images that are available all year round.  There is always something to photograph in Edinburgh and this trip was no different.  Dunbar to Edinburgh is just 25 minutes on the train, with Edinburgh Waverley station in the centre of the city.

We headed up to The Royal Mile up the narrow alleyways, past the small old fashioned pubs that are everywhere in this part of Edinburgh.  We walked up to Edinburgh Castle but it was so windy on the open area in front of the main gates that we decided to head back down The Royal Mile to see what else we could get without being blown away by the strong wind that was blowing across from the South West.

After initially using the Fujinon 18mm f2 lens on my Fujifilm X-T1 I switched to the 56mm f1.2 and decided to keep this lens on for the rest of the afternoon.  This had me looking for compositions that would suit this combinations and it certainly got the photographic juices flowing.

After a couple of hours we headed to one of my favourite watering holes for a decent pint of beer in the old part of town before walking down to the West End to meet up with the rest of the Fujifilm gang.

By now the sun had set and the street lights had come on, so I set the ISO to automatic on the X-T1 and kept the aperture set to f1.2 on the 56mm lens.  This allowed me to capture some lowlight shots while handholding the camera.

All in all the short few hours to Edinburgh were very productive.  It is a city that is probably my to photograph for street photography and I can highly recommend it to any photographer who is thinking of traveling to Scotland.

Of course, MacLean Photographic is available to give photographic tours and workshops in Edinburgh, please contact Jeff Carter for more details if you are interested in joining one of these workshops.
